Human Resources Center, Inc. has proudly served the communities of Northeastern Pennsylvania since 1973. We’ve remained a hidden gem which serves the Northeast corridor of Pennsylvania, with locations in Honesdale, Lords Valley, and Effort.
Now in our 45th year, the Human Resources Center, Inc., or HRC, is an agency devoted to enriching the lives of some very special people.
Well, our mission is “to provide individualized support to all people, regardless of their “abilities.” To promote meaningful life choices, encourage self-advocacy, independence and community inclusion.”
How do we accomplish that?
Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, HRC provides housing, employment, training, and care to individuals with special needs, through a variety of programs spanning 7 counties across NEPA.
There are 5 Supervised Community Residential Homes (aka Group Homes). Functioning like any other home, the residents live, go to work, attend a day program, go on outings to shows, shopping etc., while at the same time receiving assistance and support from fully trained staff.
The Life Sharing Program is an alternative and growing option for individuals who prefer to live in a “family setting”. Similar to foster care, placement with a family occurs, however, there are some differences. Life Sharing is viewed as a permanent placement that can occur at any age. Individuals with special needs are matched with families whose lifestyle and interests are similar to their own.
On the other hand, Home and Community Services offers supports to individuals who reside at home with their own family. These services may include respite, habilitation and companion services, assistance in obtaining adaptive equipment, transportation or even physical adaptations to their home or vehicle.
Our Place and Our Place Too are adult training facilities that offer CPS, or Community Participation Support. They currently operate out of our Honesdale and Lords Valley locations. This program allows individuals the opportunity to socialize with their peers while learning new skills both on location and out in the community. It is a combination of recreational activities, volunteering, education/training, career exploration, health/wellness, and an overall improved quality of life with a multitude of opportunities for self-improvement and giving back to the community.
A typical day of recreational activities may include discussing current events, computer time to develop news skills and interests, arts and crafts, or cooking. There are outings to parks, farms, and movie theaters and sometimes fun shopping excursions are on the calendar of activities.
Classroom time includes not only math and reading, but the learning and development of life skills, technical skills, social skills, and other tools that will help to increase independence and self-advocacy while also helping to enrich lives.
Volunteering offers participants new experiences, opportunity to meet new people, explore new hobbies or jobs all while being able to give back to their community. Our CPS and Day Program works closely with the Community Integrated Employment (CIE) Program in obtaining employment for participants who are preparing to or are actively job seeking. Involvement in the community through volunteering not only creates opportunities for personal contribution, but it opens the door for new experiences and the development of interests. Individuals can sustain a range of skills and competencies necessary to pursue competitive integrated employment - building natural, organic support systems and social networks, increasing independence and promoting self-reliance, and experiencing meaningful community inclusion.
HRC’s Community Integrated Employment (CIE) program helps individuals secure and maintain employment in the community. They do this by matching a job seeker with a job, assisting in the application and interview process and providing one on one job coaching once a job is attained. Job coaches provide “follow-up” with employers and employees to insure job satisfaction is maintained by both. It is a win-win situation.
Employers looking for new employees may want to consider giving HRC a call to find out if they have any potential applicants!
Pre-Employment Transition, works hand in hand with local school districts, providing special education students a smooth transition to life upon graduation. Assistance varies with each student and offers opportunity to spend part of their school day out in the community exploring job options.
Last but not least, HRC operates two Vocational Training Centers (VTC’s), also known as HRC Manufacturing. The centers act as a fulfillment house, subcontracting work for various small home based to large businesses and manufacturers. Individuals work and earn a paycheck assembling, packaging, wrapping, shipping and much more. HRC Mfg., also operates “Shred-able” a fully insured, bonded and secure, document shredding at their Honesdale location.
All work and no fun? Absolutely not!
HRC hosts a variety of events, including annual Christmas parties, Summer Cookouts, and Employee Appreciation Days along with plenty of other opportunities for fun throughout the year!
As you can see the Human Resources Center, Inc., has been very busy over the past 45 years! And we continue to grow and change... with several new projects on the horizon.
