From Detroit to Honolulu, my journey in medicine started with a dream of a lifelong career in service. Born under the sign of Seagram’s 7 Crown, I entered med school with 10 years of active and reserve time in the U.S. Army already under my belt. Passing up Yale’s offer for my intern year, I chose to be stationed at Tripler Medical Center in Honolulu, fully expecting to be a “lifer.”

Reflecting on these early years and the choices that set everything in motion, I’m reminded of how each step led me here—to a career and a life dedicated to serving others. 🌅

Honoring Dr. David Hume, a true pioneer and mentor who shaped the field of medicine as we know it. He, along with his esteemed colleagues Dr. Richard Lillehei and Dr. Joe Murray, laid the very foundation for organ transplantation—one of the most groundbreaking advancements in modern medicine.

From his bravery as a combat physician in WWII to his brilliance in surgery, Dr. Hume inspired countless lives. Although he passed in the 1980s and missed out on the Nobel Prize he so deserved, his legacy lives on in every life-saving transplant procedure performed today. Thank you, Dr. Hume, for paving the way and inspiring so many others out there like me. 🙏
