Hawaii’s leader in the care of women, infants and children since 1890. Like us for the latest news! A year later, Kauikeolani Children's Hospital opened.
(1590)
This is the story of two hospitals: Kauikeolani Children's Hospital and Kapiolani Maternity Home. Concerned about the welfare of Hawaii's mothers, Queen Kapiolani raised the $8,000 needed to open Kapiolani Maternity Home in 1890. In 1908, Albert and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox donated $50,000 to start a children's hospital. The community, concerned that two of every seven infants in Hawaii did not live to see their first birthday, rallied to match the Wilcox's gift. The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Staying true to its mission, the nonprofit hospital has played a vital role in the health of Hawaii's women, children and adolescents. What began a century ago is continuing today. Kapiolani Medical Center is Hawaii’s only women and children's hospital. Each year, we care for thousands of women and children from all over the Pacific – including the very sickest. Philanthropic support is vital. Your gifts make a difference. Just as Hawaii’s families have relied on Kapiolani Medical Center as a community resource, this nonprofit hospital relies on philanthropic support from its ohana of donors. As the physicians, nurses and staff continue to serve the people of Hawaii, and provide exceptional medical care, we thank you for helping to fulfill this important mission.

Terence Young, CEO of Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children and EVP of O‘ahu Operations for Hawai‘i Pacific Health, recently spent an afternoon in the Brain Station classroom at Kapi‘olani Medical Center. The kids were in the middle of their “Keeping up with Kapi‘olani” lesson, and Terence got to hear their take on everything from admissions to the many roles that keep the hospital running. 🧠💙
They also shared ideas for ways to make the patient experience even better for keiki and families. Their perspectives sparked thoughtful conversations and a few good laughs.
One highlight of the visit was a hospital gown design activity. The kids showed off their creativity, and Terence joined in by creating a design of his own. 🎨
Brain Station celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, providing a classroom experience and a sense of normalcy for our pediatric patients. We are grateful to our Child Life team, teachers, volunteers and generous community donors who have helped build and support this special space for patients.

This story of two hospitals began more than a century ago with a queen’s mission to improve the health of Hawaii’s women and children.
When Queen Kapiolani raised the $8,000 needed to establish the Kapiolani Maternity Home in 1890, her mission was to ensure that the women and children of Hawaii had access to proper quality health care.
In 1908, Albert and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox donated $50,000 to start a children's hospital. The community, concerned that two of every seven infants in Hawaii did not live to see their first birthday, rallied to match the Wilcox's gift. A year later, Kauikeolani Children's Hospital opened. The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Staying true to its mission, the nonprofit hospital has played a vital role in the health of Hawaii's women, children and adolescents.
After more than a century, Kapiolani Medical Center, an affiliate of the state’s largest health care provider, Hawaii Pacific Health, is Hawaii’s only women and children's hospital and continues to care for thousands of women and children from all over the Pacific.

Hawaiian Language Display
Hawaii Pacific Health and its member hospitals honor the Hawaiian language and its use of diacritical marks, the glottal stop and the macron (okina and kahako). While we use these marks in our communication materials, we have omitted them in our online platforms as they are often limited in their ability to display these marks.
