Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children

Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children Hawaii’s leader in the care of women, infants and children since 1890. Like us for the latest news! A year later, Kauikeolani Children's Hospital opened.
(1587)

This is the story of two hospitals: Kauikeolani Children's Hospital and Kapiolani Maternity Home. Concerned about the welfare of Hawaii's mothers, Queen Kapiolani raised the $8,000 needed to open Kapiolani Maternity Home in 1890. In 1908, Albert and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox donated $50,000 to start a children's hospital. The community, concerned that two of every seven infants in Hawaii did not liv

e to see their first birthday, rallied to match the Wilcox's gift. The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Staying true to its mission, the nonprofit hospital has played a vital role in the health of Hawaii's women, children and adolescents. What began a century ago is continuing today. Kapiolani Medical Center is Hawaii’s only women and children's hospital. Each year, we care for thousands of women and children from all over the Pacific – including the very sickest. Philanthropic support is vital. Your gifts make a difference. Just as Hawaii’s families have relied on Kapiolani Medical Center as a community resource, this nonprofit hospital relies on philanthropic support from its ohana of donors. As the physicians, nurses and staff continue to serve the people of Hawaii, and provide exceptional medical care, we thank you for helping to fulfill this important mission.

247 days. One extraordinary journey. 💪✨

Lexie Ho‘omana is this year’s recipient of Mika’s Courage and Resiliency Award, a patient-created honor recognizing courage and resilience at Kapi‘olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

Recognized for her incredible strength, focus and determination after months of critical illness in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Lexie's journey is nothing short of remarkable.

Admitted in February 2025 following an influenza infection, Lexie became critically ill and required ECMO support for 109 days, one of the longest runs documented statewide. Her recovery did not stop there. She continued to push forward through prolonged ventilator support, intensive rehabilitation and months of healing.

Throughout it all, Lexie remained optimistic and determined, inspiring her care team and loved ones every step of the way. Her story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when courage and resilience lead the way. 💙

💙💚 April is S*xual Assault Awareness Month, a time for our community to stand together and show support for survivors.

At the Hawaiʻi State Capitol, staff of the S*x Abuse Treatment Center (SATC), a program of Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children, were joined by law enforcement, government and community partners to stand in solidarity with survivors and raise awareness about sexual violence, as well as the growing danger of online image-based sexual crimes, including sextortion.

SATC has provided services to the community for nearly 50 years. From July 2024-June 2025, SATC helped 855 sexual assault survivors, nearly 20% between the ages of 15-19. Among these survivors were women, men and children, with the youngest just 2 years old.

If you or someone you know is experiencing physical or online sexual abuse, you are not alone. Confidential, 24/7 help is available through SATC’s hotline at 808‑524‑7273 or at SATCHawaii.org.

Denise was just 2 years old when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2022. Originally from Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia, Denise and her family traveled to Hawai‘i so she could receive care at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children.

After years of treatment for leukemia, Denise is now in remission, a milestone her family celebrates with deep gratitude. 💙

To say mahalo for the compassionate care Denise received from Dr. Wade Kyono and the Wilcox Unit and Pediatric Ambulatory Unit teams, her family and friends presented a $3,800 donation to the Martha B. Smith Cancer & Infusion Center.

“We held a fundraiser and sold tickets and items to raise the money to say thank you for caring for Denise,” shared her mother, Ailina.

Today, Denise is energetic and spunky, ready to take on the world with her confident smile and positive attitude. ✨ Her journey is a reminder that Kapiʻolani’s pediatric oncology care reaches families across the Pacific, well beyond Hawai‘i.

Mahalo for this generous gift, which helps support other keiki and families facing cancer. 🌺

Play is more than just fun. It’s healing. 🧸💙

We’re grateful to share that Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women & Children has been selected as a 2026 grant recipient from The Toy Foundation’s Play Fund, part of a $600,000 investment supporting 37 children’s hospitals nationwide.

This funding helps bring the power of play into the hospital setting, strengthening programs like Child Life that provide comfort, joy and a sense of normalcy for patients and families during some of their most challenging moments.

From creative play to sensory-friendly experiences, these moments make a real difference in a child’s healing journey. We’re honored to be part of a nationwide effort reaching more than 220,000 children.

Mahalo to The Toy Foundation and partners across the toy industry for helping us continue this important work right here at home. 💙

✨ Keiki with a big heart ✨

This month’s is Leila Mayeda, a third grade student from Noelani Elementary who turned creativity into kindness. 💜

Leila started making bracelets at home, then launched her own bracelet business and donated 100% of the proceeds to support the Hospital Facility Dog Program at Kapi‘olani Medical Center, inspired by her own experience as a former patient and by her love for dogs. 🐶

As an extra special touch, Leila even created a custom “Thank You” necklace for Chief Canine Officer Ruby, who brings comfort, joy and smiles to patients and staff throughout the hospital each day.

Mahalo, Leila, for showing us that no matter your age, you can make a powerful difference. 🌈

The Story of Two Hospitals

This story of two hospitals began more than a century ago with a queen’s mission to improve the health of Hawaii’s women and children.

When Queen Kapiolani raised the $8,000 needed to establish the Kapiolani Maternity Home in 1890, her mission was to ensure that the women and children of Hawaii had access to proper quality health care.

In 1908, Albert and Emma Kauikeolani Wilcox donated $50,000 to start a children's hospital. The community, concerned that two of every seven infants in Hawaii did not live to see their first birthday, rallied to match the Wilcox's gift. A year later, Kauikeolani Children's Hospital opened. The two hospitals joined in 1978 to become Kapiolani Medical Center for Women & Children. Staying true to its mission, the nonprofit hospital has played a vital role in the health of Hawaii's women, children and adolescents. After more than a century, Kapiolani Medical Center, an affiliate of the state’s largest health care provider, Hawaii Pacific Health, is Hawaii’s only women and children's hospital and continues to care for thousands of women and children from all over the Pacific.
