Cases of cervical cancer have decreased in recent years, but it still affects many women annually.

Cervical cancer used to be the leading cause of cancer death in women in the United States, however, increasing screening and prevention has changed that. According to recent numbers from the National Cancer Institute, nearly 14,500 women in the United States received a diagnosis of cervical cancer and more than 4,200 died from the disease last year. January is an important time to continue to build awareness, research, and resources to keep the diagnosis numbers down.

The aim of observing the World Leprosy Day is to create awareness against the stigma attached to the disease, by making the general community aware that it is a disease spread by a type of bacteria and it can be easily cured.
The remote Kalaupapa peninsula on the island of Molokai housed a settlement for Leprosy patients from 1866 to 1969. A cure had finally been found. Almost thirty years would pass before Hawai`i's isolation policy was finally abolished in 1969.When it was closed, many residents chose to remain. Over the years, more than 8,000 leprosy patients lived on the settlement.
Former patients living in Kalaupapa today have chosen to remain there, most for the rest of their lives. Kalaupapa has been home for 100 years for people once banished from society, but it is in transition due to its ever decreasing patient population. The settlement is much quieter than it once was.

The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean formally launched today the Regional Cervical Cancer Elimination Strategy for the Eastern Mediterranean at a hybrid press conference hosted by WHO leaders and joined by women who have survived cervical cancer, advocates fighting the disease and high-level speakers. The event introduced the “90-70-90” targets set by the strategy: for countries to achieve 90% human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination coverage for girls by age 15, 70% screening coverage for women by ages 35 and 45, and 90% treatment for cervical pre-cancer and management for women with cancer by 2030.
