💉 “Does testosterone replacement increase prostate cancer risk?” This is one of the most common (and important) questions men ask me. Here’s what the evidence actually says 👇
✅ According to the New England Journal of Medicine (TRAVERSE trial), testosterone replacement has NOT been shown to increase prostate cancer risk in men with low testosterone.
⚠️ Important note: These studies excluded men who already had prostate cancer, high PSA, or prostate symptoms.
🔍 What you should know about PSA levels (Prostate-Specific Antigen):
Men in their 40s: normal ≤ 2.5
Men in their 50s: normal ≤ 3.5
Men in their 60s: normal ≤ 4.5
📈 Testosterone therapy can raise PSA levels—but that doesn’t always mean cancer. It’s about context and monitoring.
Safety Guidelines I Follow:
👉 If PSA is 3.5 or higher before therapy, I refer patients to a urologist first.
👉 If you have prostate symptoms or an enlarged prostate, testosterone therapy is not recommended.
I use evidence-based tools like Open Evidence to give patients answers backed by top journals, so they feel confident and safe in their treatment decisions.
