For years, I have been educating on functional medicine approaches, especially how nutrition and lifestyle can shape oneโ€™s health. Now I have had the opportunity to share this information, focusing on the female endocrine system, with a greater audience through documentary, which is exploring perimenopause through the lens of nutrition, supplements, and lifestyle.

I am thrilled to be part of this important movement! For too long, menopause has been reduced to symptom management, but the conversation is shifting toward root causes and whole-person health. What excites me is that we are finally bringing in the functional medicine perspective, looking at how food, nutrients, supplements, lifestyle, and daily rhythms influence this transition.

It feels like a pivotal time in womenโ€™s health, and I am honored to help move this conversation forward together with Symphony Natural Health and the movement with and grateful for the opportunity to be part of it! ๐Ÿงก๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿฉท

I always get excited when I see studies on mangoes!

A recent randomized clinical trial looked at the effects of mango intake in 48 adults with overweight or obesity and chronic low-grade inflammation. Participants consumed either mango or a control product (Italian ice) for 4 weeks, 1 cup twice daily. The findings were noteworthy: while inflammatory markers (IL-6, TNFฮฑ, hs-CRP) and fasting glucose did not change, those in the mango group had significantly lower fasting insulin, improved insulin resistance scores (HOMA-IR), and better insulin responses during a glucose tolerance test. Researchers also observed a twofold increase in expression of Nrf2, a gene that supports antioxidant defenses, though this did not reach statistical significance.

Reading this study resonates with me personally. I have always loved mangoes, and during perimenopause and even now in postmenopause, I found myself craving dried mango. At times, I worried this might be detrimental to my blood sugar, but seeing evidence that mango may actually support insulin sensitivity gives me pause. It makes me reflect on how cravings can sometimes (not always!) be the bodyโ€™s way of guiding us back toward balance.

In The Rainbow Diet, I describe how orange foods often nourish the endocrine system, and this science deepens that connection for me.

๐ŸŒฟ Phytochemical Cycling + Hormonal Rhythms ๐ŸŒ™โœจ
Your hormones run on a daily rhythm, and your food can too. By aligning colorful plant compounds with the bodyโ€™s natural clock, you can help support energy, focus, and rest. Here are some of my ideas of how to sync your circadian-hormonal rhythm with plant food intake (Iโ€™m calling this โ€œphytochemical cyclingโ€!):

โ˜€๏ธ Morning (Cortisol Peak)
Flavonoids (green tea ๐Ÿต, citrus ๐ŸŠ) and nitrates (greens ๐Ÿฅฌ, beets โค๏ธ) are studied for their role in alertness and circulation.

๐ŸŒž Midday (Digestive Fire Strong)
Crucifers and lignans (broccoli ๐Ÿฅฆ, arugula ๐ŸŒฑ, flax ๐ŸŒฟ) support healthy hormone metabolism.
Carotenoids (tomatoes ๐Ÿ…, peppers ๐ŸŒถ๏ธ, watermelon ๐Ÿ‰) may help buffer oxidative stress at the time of peak UV exposure.

๐ŸŒ‡ Afternoon (Energy Dip)
Adaptogens (maca ๐ŸŒฟ, ginseng ๐ŸŒฑ) and cacao ๐Ÿซ have been traditionally used to support resilience and mood.

๐ŸŒ™ Evening (Melatonin Rising)
Polyphenols (tart cherry ๐Ÿ’, kiwi ๐Ÿฅ, chamomile ๐ŸŒผ) and magnesium-rich foods (pumpkin seeds ๐ŸŽƒ) are connected with relaxation and nighttime recovery.

โœจ Takeaway: Think of your food as part of your circadian rhythm: Morning phytoenergizers, midday phytoprotectors, afternoon adaptogens, evening calmers. ๐ŸŒˆ

When it comes to hormones, start with food first!

โœจ I often think of the brain as a symphony, with neurotransmitters as the messengers carrying the notes. They are constantly guiding our body, mind, and spirit in ways we cannot always see.

Back in graduate school, I only knew them as molecules and pathways. Over the years, I have come to sense their archetypal nature. Dopamine feels like the Joy Seeker, serotonin the Harmonizer, GABA the Calm Peacemaker. These messengers are not only shaping our physiology, they are also reflecting the deeper psychological and spiritual patterns we move through in life.

Science explains how they spark, soothe, connect, and protect. Psychology shows us how they mold our moods and behaviors. Spiritually, they invite us to meet the archetypes within ourselves: the warrior, the healer, the mystic, the connector.

๐ŸŒˆ To me, studying neurotransmitters has become a way of mapping the rainbow within. It is both biology and meaning, measurable and mystical.

Which archetype feels closest to you right now? Drop a color below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿป

For years I searched for answers to my own reproductive issues. I thought it was just physical: hormones, nutrients, toxins, stress. And while those were part of it, the deeper I went into my healing journey, the more I realized I needed to travel through many layers.

There were emotional imprints I hadnโ€™t processed, thoughts that kept looping, spiritual lessons asking to be seen. But what surprised me most was the energetic block, that subtle, invisible current that shapes how life force moves through us. When I began working with that energy through color, movement, expression, and creativity, my body finally started to shift.

So when I say to keep asking why on many levels, it comes from lived experience. Our bodies are not against us; they give us invitations to become more whole, more conscious, more aligned. Healing begins when we listen with curiosity and dialoging with our bodies on the deeper, symbolic root causes.

Which layer speaks to you right now? Physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, energetic, or collective?

When I think about mitochondria, I see more than tiny powerhouses: I see inner suns, quietly alchemizing light into life. I often imagine that each cell is breathing in color, translating photons into vitality and rhythm. The more I study this science, the more I feel its poetry: we are luminous beings, designed to receive the light of the world and transform it into energy, creativity, and renewal from within.
