Mahalo to Keala Kaopuiki-Santos for teaching us this breathing exercise during a training! Say the first phrase out loud or in your head while breathing in to take in the good/righteous, and say the second phrase out loud or in your head to release the bad/unrighteous 💨

🚨 After a traumatic event, should you ask for ALL the details right away?

Short answer: ❌ No.

In the immediate aftermath of trauma, the brain is still in survival mode. Pushing someone to relive every detail can actually overwhelm them and increase distress.

💡 What helps instead:
• Focus on safety (physical + emotional)
• Stay calm and present
• Let them share at their own pace
• Normalize their reactions (“This makes sense given what happened”)
• Offer simple, practical support

This approach is known as Psychological First Aid — it’s about support, not pressure.

🧠 Deep trauma processing comes later, when the person feels safe and stable, often through therapies like trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, or EMDR.

🤍 Remember: You don’t need the whole story to help someone. You just need to be there.

And now for something completely different: Some things I wish I knew before I started breastfeeding (in case it’s helpful to anyone):

1️⃣ Breastfeeding can be a hard and painful experience and you’re not alone
2️⃣ What milk blisters aka blebs and milk stones aka galactoliths are
3️⃣ The benefits of breast massage for unclogging milk ducts (although it can be painful, it is sometimes necessary)
4️⃣ The use of taking pills of sunflower lecithin to loosen clogs
5️⃣ The fact that a baby provides better suction/breast drainage than breast pumps
6️⃣ The use of different positions during breastfeeding to help with drainage
7️⃣ That things get easier around 8 weeks and that
weaning off before then is a bad idea

What did I miss?

Being able to talk about s*x with your therapist is an important part of receiving comprehensive care.

Sexual health is closely connected to mental health—impacting self-esteem, relationships, identity, boundaries, stress, and overall well-being. When these topics are avoided, important parts of your experience can go unaddressed. Your therapist should provide a confidential, nonjudgmental space where questions and concerns can be discussed safely and respectfully.

My favorite things about being a therapist are:
1️⃣ witnessing clients gaining insight about where their patterns come from
2️⃣ seeing relief from symptoms of depression, anxiety, and trauma
3️⃣ validating clients’ emotions
4️⃣ providing the first non-judgmental space a client has experienced that is focused solely on them
5️⃣ providing a corrective experience in holding emotion together
6️⃣ seeing clients realize what they want
7️⃣ laughing together/showing up as my real self as well
