🚨 After a traumatic event, should you ask for ALL the details right away?
Short answer: ❌ No.
In the immediate aftermath of trauma, the brain is still in survival mode. Pushing someone to relive every detail can actually overwhelm them and increase distress.
💡 What helps instead:
• Focus on safety (physical + emotional)
• Stay calm and present
• Let them share at their own pace
• Normalize their reactions (“This makes sense given what happened”)
• Offer simple, practical support
This approach is known as Psychological First Aid — it’s about support, not pressure.
🧠 Deep trauma processing comes later, when the person feels safe and stable, often through therapies like trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, or EMDR.
🤍 Remember: You don’t need the whole story to help someone. You just need to be there.
