🌺 Meet Dr. Katie Mau — Optometrist

For over a decade, Dr. Katie Mau has been an integral part of the Aloha Laser Vision ʻohana — known for her expertise in cornea and contact-lens care and her commitment to every patient she sees. 💕

A proud ʻIolani School graduate, Dr. Mau earned her Doctorate of Optometry from UC Berkeley and completed her residency in Cornea & Contact Lenses at SUNY College of Optometry in Manhattan. Before returning home, she worked alongside leading specialists in cornea, cataract, and glaucoma care and served as International Patient Care Director at the largest refractive-surgery center in Southeast Asia. 🌏

Known around the clinic as “Dr. Maubomian” for her meibomian-gland expertise & expressions, she’s admired for her precision, warmth, and leadership on our team. When she’s not in the clinic, you’ll find her running, traveling, playing soccer, or coaching her sons’ Archie & Ike’s soccer teams. 🏃‍♀️⚽️

👋 Meet Dr. Ryan Steck — Refractive Surgeon, Ophthalmologist, and Fellow at Aloha Laser Vision 🌺

Dr. Steck is a board-certified comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in cataract and refractive surgery, using the latest technology to correct vision and provide minimally invasive treatments for glaucoma.

A graduate of Brigham Young University and Western University of Health Sciences, Dr. Steck completed his ophthalmology residency at Madigan Army Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident.

In addition to his work here at Aloha Laser Vision, Dr. Steck serves as Chief of Refractive Surgery for the Warfighter Refractive Surgery Program at Tripler Army Medical Center — helping soldiers gain clear vision through advanced laser procedures. 🇺🇸

Outside of medicine, Dr. Steck enjoys biking, tennis, scuba diving, and playing the drums. He also loves spending time with his wife, young son, and their dog here in Hawaiʻi. 🏝️

🎉 Celebrating Dr. Alan Faulkner — Founder, Surgeon, and Visionary

For more than two decades, Dr. Faulkner has led Aloha Laser Vision with expertise, compassion, and aloha.

After moving to Hawaiʻi at just 8 years old, Dr. Faulkner graduated from Punahou School before attending Northwestern University and Tulane Medical School. In 2001, he founded Aloha Laser Vision, continuing his family’s legacy of compassionate, high-tech eye care.

Beyond the laser suite and operating room, he’s a loving husband, a cool dad, and a proud “Papa” who loves spending time with his wife Gloria (our Practice Administrator), sons Justin & Christopher (our Chief of Operations), and grandson Charlie.

Dr. Faulkner also gives back to Hawaiʻi through acts of service, including providing free LASIK/PRK to Lahaina fire survivors to help restore not only their vision but their sense of hope. 🤍

When he’s not in surgery, you’ll find him outdoors, fishing, or baking cookies for his LASIK and PRK patients — a Wednesday tradition that’s become a favorite here at ALV. 🍪

🌺 In Loving Memory of Hopena Pokipala 🌺

We’re heartbroken to share the passing of a dear friend and patient, Hopena Pokipala.

Hopena was a man of many talents whose kindness and spirit touched everyone around him — a devoted husband, a longshoreman, a model, and a proud business owner of Oysters Hawaiʻi, which he ran alongside his wife and sister-in-law. He loved the water and lived with a joy that was contagious to everyone who knew him.

Beloved by his community, Hopena will be remembered for his genuine heart and the light he brought wherever he went. We were honored to be a small part of his journey — celebrating his joy as he saw the world more clearly after LASIK, and capturing that joy forever when he graciously shared his story in our commercial.

At just 30 years old, his time with us was far too short, but his legacy of generosity, love, and humility continues to inspire all who knew him.

Our hearts are with the Chu and Pokipala ʻohana during this difficult time.
Rest in aloha, Hopena. 💚
