With heavy hearts, we remember and celebrate the life of Art Carroll, a devoted member of the Hood River Lions Club since 1991 and a true pillar of our community.

Art’s journey with the Lions began more than 40 years ago while working with the Forest Service in Mammoth Lakes, where he saw firsthand the impact of Lions service — partnering to raise funds so people with disabilities could enjoy the outdoors. That experience sparked a long term commitment to serving as a Lion.

In Hood River, he carried that spirit forward as a longtime coordinator of school vision screenings, a Lions Foundation Trustee, and an active leader in countless service projects that strengthened our community.

In 2015, he was recognized for his commitment and inducted into the Oregon Lions Hall of Fame,

Art will be deeply missed for his sense of humor, his big smile, and his unwavering dedication to so many community organizations and projects. A steadfast volunteer and leader, he truly lived a life of service — and leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire.

Being available for our community 24/7 365 is part of what we do. We have a few part time assistants that help not only in our after-hours “on call” position but also help with our daytime activities - most of our full time have started in our after-hours position as it really gives a glimpse to see if a career in funeral service is right for you. Frank Akin who owned Anderson’s Tribute Center for 25 years shared some historical pictures with me yesterday… the old gold Cadillac hearse and the front of our chapel (his 30th birthday party - back in the day prior to cell phones and pagers we had to live at the funeral home) and a picture of our chapel today.

Rachel, a sophomore at Hood River Valley High School and National Honor Society member, volunteered her time and encouraged her younger family members to help this Memorial Day cleaning veterans headstones at Mountain View Memorial Cemetery.

Earlier this year we had a neighbor of the late Gilbert Clarke a prolific artist of The Columbia River Gorge ask if we were interested in some of his art, to which I emphatically said yes, we had it framed and proudly hung today.
