We love self-advocates, and we really love seeing self-advocates on the Hill! Bergen had the opportunity this summer to intern on Capitol Hill with Congressman Ralph Norman, a US Representative for South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District. She helped with Capitol tours, met many Representatives, and was on the floor for a vote! This was an unbelievable experience advocating and showing there are no limits! Congrats, Bergen!

Our July reading camp was a success! Students “traveled” to New
Orleans, where they learned historical facts, sampled cuisine, and experienced the culture of the Big Easy. Students participated in functional reading activities, presented comprehensive materials, and acquired new skills for mastering content. Most of all, this experience allowed students from across school districts and counties to come together to develop authentic relationships with each other. Thank you Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, Alabama for making this opportunity possible!

We love hearing from our grant recipients! Meet Sophia!
Sophia received a grant to Child's Play Therapy to continue her speech therapy.

Sophia’s family writes, “Since beginning her sessions, we have seen a remarkable improvement in Sophia’s ability to communicate at home. Child's Play Therapy has become a positive and engaging outlet for her, and she genuinely looks forward to her time there. It has not only helped her grow in her communication skills but has also brought more joy and connection into our daily lives. Thanks to the Down Syndrome Alabama grant, we were able to maintain the consistency of her therapy, which is so crucial for her development.”

Sophia, keep working hard and making us proud!
Our next grant cycle will open on October 1.
