What causes light sensitivity and how can we treat it?

1. Wear FL-41 tinted glasses. These have a rose tint and block out shorter wavelengths of light (such as blue light) which trigger light sensitivity. FL-41 tint has been clinically proven to help reduce light sensitivity in migraine and other neurologic conditions.

2. Use the 20/20 rule. Screen time can trigger light sensitivity. To prevent digital eye strain, every 20 minutes, take a break by closing your eyes for 20 seconds and taking some deep breaths This will allow your eyes to both get a break from the blue light coming from your screen and also get lubricated by your tears.

3. Avoid artificial sources of cool blue light such as CFL and LED . Switch to bulbs with warmer hues. Light from the orange or red end of the spectrum will cut some of the painful blue light and minimize glare.

4. Eat more veggies and fruits which have the macular carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin. These pigments are our eye's natural blue light filters and have been shown to help decrease light sensitivity. While getting these nutrients from foods is best, an alternative is to take a supplement containing all 3 carotenoids- lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin, which has been clinically proven to decrease light sensitivity and digital eye strain.

5. Reduce your allergen exposure. Eye allergies can cause itching, redness, and burning, and light sensitivity as well. Try to limit your exposure or take allergy medications or drops to combat the symptoms.

6. Use artificial tears. Eye lubrication can go a long way to help treat dry eye, digital eye strain, as well as eye allergies. Use preservative-free drops several time day. Keeping them chilled can also be soothing!
