What is Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)?
Pink eye, also medically known as conjunctivitis, is a common eye condition that causes the white part of your eye (sclera) to become inflamed and irritated. This inflammation gives the eye a pinkish or reddish hue, hence the name "pink eye." The conjunctiva, a thin transparent membrane lining your eyelid and covering the white part of your eyeball, becomes inflamed due to various reasons. This inflammation can be triggered by viruses, bacteria, allergies, or even exposure to irritants like smoke or chemicals.
While pink eye can be quite uncomfortable and cause a gritty feeling in the eye, it's usually a mild condition that resolves on its own within a week or two. However, it's highly contagious, especially viral and bacterial pink eye, which can spread quickly through close contact with an infected person or by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching your eyes.
