SENSORY SWING SELFIES 📸🩵
The swing in our sensory room is a fan FAVORITE for many of our patients at PTS. But did you know that the swing actually has many benefits that positively impact children's physical, emotional, and cognitive development? Swinging is not only a fun activity, but a very beneficial factor of playtime. Swinging helps with:
⭐️ Muscle development and enhancing coordination and motor planning:
- Swinging actively engages muscle groups throughout the body, including the core, arms, and legs! Swinging also requires coordination, balance, and precise movement planning.
⭐️ Promoting emotional regulation and sensory enrichment:
- By providing vestibular, proprioceptive, and rhythmic movement which can be calming, aid stress reduction, and promote emotional regulation. Swinging enriches sensory experiences, often supporting sensory integration and processing, which is especially beneficial for children with sensory sensitivities.
⭐️ Improving focus and engagement:
- The repetitive motion of swinging helps improve children's focus and attention during therapy sessions. This is especially helpful in speech therapy to help built vocabulary. Speech therapists can target multimodal communication goals such as use of AAC, use of gestures and sign language, and use of verbal words and sounds such as “go”, “stop”, “spin”, “wee”, “yay”, “more”, “done”, and “swing”!
⭐️ Elevating mood and building connections:
- By stimulating the release of endorphins, swinging increases feelings of happiness and well-being, overall contributing to improved mood and social interactions. This can have a great impact on the relationship and connections built between the child and their therapist.
⭐️ Improving body awareness:
- Swinging heightens children's awareness of their body's position and movement, promoting skill mastery and injury prevention during play.
