A shout-out to the unsung heroes out there: bank tellers.
The scammers who pretend to be us and tell people they've missed jury duty and will be arrested unless they pay a cash bond have been back at it the last few days. One almost-victim reported to us that she went to her bank to withdraw thousands of dollars in fear that she would be arrested otherwise. The scammer told her she would be in trouble if she got off the phone or spoke to anyone else. The teller wrote her a note that said, "You're being scammed," then refused to allow her to withdraw the money. At that point, the woman hung up, the teller told her about the scam, and the woman called us. (Scammers lately have been asking victims to withdraw cash and deposit it in Bitcoin ATMs.)
We know this is happening way more than we hear about, so thank you to all the bank tellers who refuse to let their customers be victims of these low-lifes. You play an integral role in keeping our community safe.
Reminder:
- We will NEVER call to tell you that you have a warrant for your arrest.
- We will NEVER ask for money over the phone.
- Missing jury duty is punishable by fine in Missouri, not arrest. And you get a lot of letters before it ever even gets to that point.
