History of the Left Wing
THE LEFT WING CONTEMPORARY MOUNTAIN RETREAT·MONDAY, JANUARY 8, 2018·
In 1994, Mr. Crowe commissioned architectural designer, Carolyn Oviatt, student and protege of Fay Jones and Frank Lloyd Wright to design for the Crowes their retirement home to be located on two parcels of land along an ancient mountain ridge in central Arkansas. The residence became known as the "Crow’s Nest", and after Mr. Crowe's passing in 2008, the contemporary home, which had fallen into disrepair, was purchased by the current owners and thoroughly renovated. The owners and their general contractor, Ben White Homes, maintained the architectural integrity of Ms. Oviatt’s masterpiece and renamed "The Left Wing" for the winged feature extending east from the house over a two tiered deck. Driveway expansion, three stone stairstep paths, a courtyard, dual deck expansion and significant additional hard and soft landscaping were undertaken. Today, guests are able to stroll the 3/4 acre of natural boulders, zen gardens and plantings around the Left Wing. Overlooking two lakes and undisputedly one of the premier vistas in all of Hot Springs Village, the home features passive solar placement on an east-west grid, hardwood floors, berber bedroom carpeting, an exotic granite bar, craftsman island, his and hers master suite with a walk out entrance to a raised hot tub. A new stainless range, refrigerator, built-in microwave and dishwasher were all upgraded in 2017. The 4 ground floor bedrooms are appointed with a king, queen, full and two twin beds. Each bedroom has its own unique character and feature: the king bedroom has a wall mounted flat screen television, and features the private walk out deck and hot tub with two reclining lounges; the queen room lulls guests to sleep with the sounds of a trickling waterfall, green and bull frogs; the full size bedroom contains a wood burning fireplace, and presently a desk for the writer/reader in the family; and finally the twin room has the privacy and "away from the grownups" suited to young people planning their next vacation activity. Most recently the lower level has been finished with an open bedroom/kitchen/living room suite and a large bathroom with slate and tiled steam shower and bench. To preserve the private retreat nature of the vacation home, the lower unit is not rented separately, but can be made available upon request for retreat groups of 8 or more. Oviatt’s original blueprints for the “Crow’s Nest” are onsite and available for review with advance notice.
