Water aerobics and swimming can do wonders for chronic pain. Water activities are low impact– they won’t hurt your joints, but they can still get your heart rate up. Exercise is one of the best treatments for chronic pain because it encourages blood flow and releases endorphins. Working out in the water can keep you from getting overheated.

You may have heard that dry weather is good for your joints. There is some factual basis for this. Humidity seems to worsen pain in many people with arthritis and other chronic pain conditions. Hot, humid climates can cause increased discomfort, especially if the forecast calls for storms. When a storm moves in, barometric pressure — air pressure in the atmosphere around us– changes. Changes in barometric pressure are associated with more headaches and increased muscle and joint pain.

Hydration is important any time of year and for everyone, but it's especially important for chronic pain sufferers during the hot summertime. If you have chronic pain stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids. This will help lower your body temperature and prevent dehydration, which can worsen your pain. Be sure to drink at least eight glasses of water daily — if not more!

For many people, summertime is the best time of year. However, for those who suffer from joint pain or chronic pain, summer can be a difficult time. The hot weather can aggravate pain and make it more challenging to get relief. If you pain is an issue for you, try to stay cool as much as possible. Red grapes contain resveratrol, a chemical compound that is thought to have anti-inflammatory benefits. Resveratrol is also found in foods such as berries and peanuts. In the lab, resveratrol has been shown to stop certain cells in the body from responding to the signals of inflammation, suggesting that it could ultimately help fight pain. Subsequent research has shown that combining resveratrol with turmeric may enhance the ability of both to fight inflammation, important when you’re living with pain.

During the hot summer, we recommend low-impact physical exercises with gentle movements for our patients with chronic pain. Exercises such as water aerobics, swimming, and walking in the pool are low-impact enough not to exert too much strain on the muscles and joints. They are also excellent physical exercise options as they provide resistance without stressing the body.

It's important to try to stay keep working even if you're in pain. Research shows that people become less active and more depressed when they don't work. Being at work may distract you from the pain and might not make it worse. Talk to your supervisor or boss if parts of your job are difficult to begin with, but stress that you want to be at work even if accommodations must be made.

Researchers have become interested in the anti-inflammatory benefits of olive oil because people who eat a traditional Mediterranean diet (which is rich in olive oil) seem to have fewer health conditions related to inflammation. In fact, extra-virgin olive oil might contain compounds similar to ibuprofen, making it a great oil for cooking foods or in recipes like salad dressings as part of your daily management plan when living with pain.
