Today we celebrate International Cochlear Implant Day and the life-changing impact they have on so many of our patients. 💙👂 Meet our patient, Pam, who was kind enough to share her story.
"Hi, I’m Pam! I have Meniere’s disease. With each attack, my inner ear was damaged more and more.” What started as mild hearing loss progressed to moderate loss, eventually resulting in loss of clarity — “basically deaf in one ear and moderate hearing loss in the other.”
“Life was a struggle. I found myself sitting back in situations because it wasn’t possible to be in the conversations anymore.” Trying to catch sounds, read lips, and piece sentences together “was so much work” that it often “made it not worth it anymore.”
After further testing, Pam qualified for a cochlear implant. “Surgery and healing were so easy.” Three weeks later, her processor was activated — and “I couldn’t believe the difference. Before the cochlear I couldn’t hear my footsteps on the floor. The first activation day, I could. It was a little different hearing, but back to hearing!”
Now, she says, “I am back in social situations and enjoying everything I was missing. My only regret is that I couldn’t have gotten it sooner. It's a God send & I'm so very thankful for the technology and my group of providers that got me to it & through it! Best thing I’ve ever done! So very thankful!”
