“Wabanaki Nations in our homelands now called Maine are thankful for the stewardship and cultural values our people have practiced and honored in these lands and waters for over 12,000 years. We are a vibrant and resilient part of the community of Maine that we all call home today. We come together around sacred food created in a fresh way to show the power and presence of Wabanaki people in the Dawnland. We are so much more than any stereotype or false image forced upon us.  We are dynamic contributors, happy to share our generative creativity with all of our allies, neighbors, and friends.”

Just in time for deer hunting!

Most types of meat can be used to make jerky. Even if you don't use venison, beef round roast and pork loin are excellent options too.

(Note: Bear meat should not be used for home jerky because it must be cooked to an internal temperature of 185 degrees Fahrenheit for all parasites and disease-causing organisms to be killed.)

Jerky can be made using whole muscles or ground meats, though whole muscle is recommended for home processing because it makes a product that is safer and more traditional.

November is Diabetes Prevention Month. Diabetes touches many of our families and loved ones, but together, we can change that. We can prevent diabetes by honoring our cultural traditions.

Here are some ways you can prevent Diabetes:

- Eating our traditional foods like wild game, fish, berries, fiddleheads, corn, beans and squash
- Moving our bodies with a purpose through traditional dance, walking, harvesting and playing with our youth
- Checking your blood sugar regularly with a medical provider

Healing happens when we are together in community. Caring for ourselves honors our ancestors and strengthens the next generation.

Join the fight to end diabetes at www.diabetes.org, and find out what you can do to educate yourself and others.

Due to the possible temporary discontinuation of Snap Benefits resulting from the government shutdown, our organization is receiving calls from generous community members who wish to donate food. Our next regular drive-through food distribution is scheduled for November 8, commencing at 10 AM. We are currently planning a second distribution event in mid-November; further details will be announced shortly. For those interested in contributing food items, we are in need of the following: cereal, baby formula, milk, eggs, cheese, fruit, and vegetables. All donations are gratefully accepted. Please contact the Adopt-A-Block office at 532-2273 to arrange drop-off times. Individuals requiring food assistance are invited to attend the drive-through food distribution or contact our office for alternative arrangements.

The Community Health Education Program began working with the children of the Maliseet Headstart this week and brought in a special snack.

The kids had pumpkin squares and we discussed the five food groups. We read “A Fruit is a Suitcase for Seeds” by Jean Richards.

We then discussed which vegetables are actually fruits such as tomatoes and worked on identifying the food groups represented in their snack.

This weeks TRAIL program the kids had a healthy trail mix for snack and we discussed the medicine wheel and how each part makes up a whole healthy person. We then had four volunteers to represent each quadrant: emotional, physical, spiritual and mental.

The rest of the kids took examples that were written on post it notes and stuck them on the person/quadrant they thought fit with the example. Once they were done we went over each example and discussed why it went where it did.

The children then post the post it’s on the poster board and hung it up for a reminder on what healthy/whole person looks like and how they incorporate these skills into their own lives.
