Day 7 of Kwanzaa – Imani (Faith) 🖤❤️💚

Today we honor Imani = faith.

Not the kind that only shows up during the holidays, but the kind we carry all year long.
Faith in miracles we can’t yet see.
Faith in ourselves when we feel tired, uncertain, or afraid.
Faith in each other when the world tries to convince us to stand alone.

Imani reminds us that even in seasons of loss, struggle, and rebuilding, we are never without hope. Our ancestors believed in our becoming. Because of that, we are still here, still rising, still dreaming.

May we continue to choose faith. Believe in our healing, in our communities, and in the beautiful futures we are creating together. ✨

Slips & Suspenders

I spent too much time thinking about the past
Thinking about warmer times when people got together for good reasons or any reasons at all
Those days are gone
I’m so over all the isms and schisms that I decided to celebrate Kwanzaa this year
Not because my beige children needed to get in touch with their Africanness
But because I feel closer to the ancestors past than these creatures I see at present
They used to wear slips and suspenders and give a s**t when someone else was in need
Now each stays to his own
and there’s never a generosity that goes unposted
Stepped out sharp as a tack in a 3-piece suit with shoes shined to a glass on a Saturday night
Now you gotta make sure the lighting and angles are just right
The layers they donned to make the outfit complete
Meant that they cared enough to be taken seriously
Nowadays if you don’t take a picture it didn’t happen
Give back often and loudly while someone is silently suffering
Worried about where the next meal is coming from
Those that feel too ashamed to ask for help and too proud to be the subject of someone’s public good will
I see you out there
You’re just as lonely as me
Maybe if I put my lonely with your lonely
We can come up with a solution
Fight together against parasites that will surely attack
If we sit at home alone too long
Just call on me
I’ll be there
And if I eat you eat
Maybe we can get together and go out walking
Just so we can talk about how good things used to be
