In the 1940s, Abbye "Pudgy" Stockton was lifting her 185-lb husband overhead, writing fitness columns for women, and performing acrobatics on Muscle Beach — all while challenging the era’s outdated views on femininity and strength.
She helped launch the first sanctioned women’s weightlifting competition, opened one of the earliest women-only gyms, and appeared on dozens of magazine covers, inspiring a generation.
Stockton didn’t just lift weights — she lifted barriers.
Her story redefined what it meant to be a strong woman in a world that told her not to be.
