👁️ Understanding Keratitis — When the Cornea Becomes Inflamed

Your cornea is the clear, dome-shaped window at the front of your eye that helps focus light. When it becomes inflamed or infected, the condition is called Keratitis — and it’s not something to ignore.

⚠️ Common Causes

Contact lens overuse or poor hygiene

Eye injury or foreign body

Bacterial, viral, or fungal infections

Dry eyes or exposure to contaminated water (like swimming pools or hot tubs)

🔍 Symptoms to Watch For

Redness and pain

Blurred or decreased vision

Light sensitivity

Excessive tearing or discharge

A feeling that “something’s in your eye”

👨‍⚕️ Why It Matters

Untreated keratitis can lead to permanent vision loss or corneal scarring. Early diagnosis is key. If your eyes feel irritated or painful—especially if you wear contacts—don’t wait it out.

💡 Prevention Tips

Always wash your hands before touching your lenses.

Never sleep in your contacts unless prescribed.

Avoid water exposure with lenses (no swimming or showering in them).

Keep your lens case clean and replaced every 3 months.

Blepharitis – Inflammation of the Eyelids

Tiny mites, big irritation.

Do your eyes feel itchy, dry, or gritty? Do your eyelids look red, flaky, or crusty along the lash line?
You might be dealing with blepharitis, a common eyelid condition often linked to Demodex mites — microscopic parasites that live in the lash follicles.

🪳 Yes, they’re real.
Most people have a few, but when they overgrow, they cause inflammation, irritation, and even contribute to dry eye symptoms.

🔍 Signs of blepharitis:

Red, swollen eyelid margins

Crusts or flakes at the base of lashes

Itching, burning, or stinging

Morning eye discomfort or sticky lids

✨ Treatment matters
At Southern Eye Institute, we offer advanced diagnostics and treatments — including Lid hygiene therapies, in-office mite cleansing, IPL/RF for chronic inflammation and now Lipiflow treatment — to restore comfort and clarity to your eyes.
