51 years ago today, my family was irrevocably changed by the tragic death of my 3 year old brother, Scott Michael. I was yet to be born, but my two older brothers and my parents were understandably completely devastated by the loss. I was born a year later and I was raised with the intention and vision that every day is a blessing, a gift, and an opportunity to live life to the fullest.

I came after the traumatic event and yet I am still affected to this day by his death and the effect it had on my family as a whole. I am forever grateful that my parents stayed together and proceeded to live life with love and joy.

Was it easy? Not at all. But their love was supportive and utterly unconditional. I believe that’s what death can gift to us. The understanding that life is absolutely precious and fleeting and not at all guaranteed. 💜

I never got to meet that sweet little boy, but I grew up hearing stories about his wild antics and sweet disposition.

I also witnessed how the trauma affected my family, and still does, even 51 years later.
Trauma is something we ALL experience and it’s something we all handle differently.

I truly believe that the loss of my brother shaped the trajectory of my life. It is why I do the work I do. I am deeply passionate about assisting others in regulating their nervous systems and supporting folks in navigating life as best they can, in the moment.

For that is all we ever have- the present moment.

Everything else is in the past or yet to come. True joy comes from being present. And I’m going to keep reminding myself, my family, my loved ones, and my community to live life to the absolute fullest. It’s the least we can do to honor the lives of those who are no longer with us. ✨

I was recently working with a client and we came upon the topic of being kind to ourselves. This can be a really challenging concept. And even harder to accomplish and put into practice. I have found this to be especially true for women. We are so incredibly hard on ourselves. We hold ourselves to completely unrealistic expectations and feel shame, anger, fear, guilt, etc. when we don’t live up to them.

Why do we torture ourselves this way? We wouldn’t expect those standards from anyone else. So why do we do it to ourselves? And how can we change the internal narrative?

This is what I’ve learned over the years. (And trust me- I am still learning and navigating daily!) Awareness is absolutely vital, along with a willingness to adapt and change. Simply noticing the unkind thought, or guilty feeling, etc. can help us disrupt the pattern. Notice, then state the opposite in a positive statement or begin to welcome a sense of ease into the body, rather than tension. Tuning into your breath or sensations in the body can help you find that ease or relaxation.

I also find EFT Tapping to be incredibly supportive for disrupting negative thoughts, feelings, and emotions, while helping us accept a more positive outlook. 🥰
This technique literally re-wires the neural pathways of our brain. 🧠 Negative thought patterns can transform into positive patterns. How cool is that???? 🤯

Here’s to rewriting our inner narratives and to empowering ourselves to be the change we wish to see in this life. 💜

How important is sleep???💤
It’s the #1 way our body recovers from stress. It’s absolutely imperative for nervous system regulation. It’s how we rejuvenate all of our bodily systems for the next day. Sleep is literally one of the most important activities in which we can partake.

Oliver knows!!! Our furry friends are so keyed into what their bodies need. Why aren’t we?

How is your sleep? Do you have a bedtime ritual/routine? What about screen time??? Room temperature? Eating right before sleep? Watching news or cortisol activating shows? Are these all things that get in the way of a good night’s sleep?
Y-E-S!!!!!

So, just for tonight, I encourage you to:

•stop eating at least two hours prior to bedtime

•no screen time at least one hour before bed

•create a welcoming, cool environment that will support deep sleep

•do some gentle stretching to ready the body for sleep

•listen to a sleep meditation or sleep music to assist you in falling asleep 😴

I had the absolute honor of spending time with the Fayette County Early Intervention team yesterday. These amazing souls do so much in our community to assist our little ones. It fills my heart to be able to share some simple tools and holistic techniques to help them navigate their every day lives. 💜

We did some simple stretching and breathing, and then moved into several rounds of EFT tapping technique, followed up by a relaxing and rejuvenating body scan. We also discussed the importance of creating daily routines for the morning and evening to help bookend our days with positive intention.

Sometimes we just need reminders to care for ourselves- especially for folks in high stress vocations. 🥰

I truly love what I do and I’m so very grateful to have the opportunity to share with professional groups like this!
