🤱🏽 August is National Breastfeeding Month

Breastfeeding is more than a personal decision—it’s a public health issue.

📣 National Breastfeeding Month is a call to action for:
✔️ Increasing access to lactation consultants and peer support
✔️ Supporting policies that allow time and space for breastfeeding in public and at work
✔️ Ensuring health equity for all families, regardless of background

🌺 July is Fibroids Awareness Month

Let’s talk about the health of Houston women.
🩺 Uterine fibroids—noncancerous growths of the uterus—affect up to 80% of women by age 50. But in Houston, the impact hits differently.

💔 Why This Matters in Houston:

🔸 Black women in Harris County are 3x more likely to be hospitalized for fibroid-related complications compared to white women.
🔸 Many go years undiagnosed, often told their symptoms are “normal” or dismissed as routine.
🔸 Heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, and infertility deeply affect quality of life.

🚨 Common Symptoms Include:

🔴 Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
💥 Pelvic pain or pressure
🚻 Frequent urination or constipation
😣 Painful s*x or lower back pain
🤰🏽 Difficulty getting pregnant

If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and you don’t have to suffer in silence.

🧪 HIV Testing: False Positives & False Negatives – What You Need to Know

📍 Your status matters—and so does your timing.

Not all HIV test results are 100% accurate the first time. That’s why understanding false positives and false negatives is crucial to getting the right care.

🔬 What’s a False Negative?
A test says you're HIV-negative, but you’re actually positive.

🕓 This usually happens when you're tested too early—before your body has produced enough antibodies or antigens for the test to detect (known as the window period).

👉 For most people, that window is 10 to 90 days after exposure.

Solution:
📅 Retest after 30 days or ask your provider about 4th-gen antigen/antibody tests, which can detect HIV earlier than older tests.

🔬 What’s a False Positive?
A test says you’re HIV-positive, but you’re actually negative.

This can happen if:
▪️ You recently got vaccinated
▪️ You have another viral infection
▪️ The test was too sensitive or misread

Solution:
🧾 Always follow up with a confirmatory test, like the HIV-1/HIV-2 differentiation assay or a Western Blot, to rule out a false result.

🎗️ HPV Awareness & Prevention for Houston June

🧪 Did you know?

HPV is the most common STI—and it causes over 90% of cervical cancers, not to mention a**l, pe**le, and oropharyngeal cancers.

📉 Great news: nationwide rates of precancerous lesions have dropped by 80% among young women ages 20–24 since the HPV vaccine rolled out in 2006—but Texas still lags behind with only 49% of adolescents initiating vaccination (vs. 62.6% nationally).

📍 What about Houston?

The cervical cancer incidence in Harris County is 9.8 per 100,000, slightly above the Texas rate (9.6) and U.S. average (7.5)

Regular screening can catch changes early—Pap and HPV co-tests are recommended for ages 30–65.

🔍 Taking action now matters:

💉 HPV vaccine—recommended starting at age 9, up to 26 (and up to 45 in select cases)
🩺 Pap + HPV tests—every 3–5 years depending on age

This Upcoming Week on June 27 it is National HIV Testing Day

💡 Knowing your status is self-care.
HIV testing is more than a health check — it’s a powerful act of protecting your reproductive well-being. In Houston and beyond, getting tested means taking charge of your health, your future, and your relationships.

🧬 Why it matters:
HIV can impact fertility, pregnancy, and the health of both partners. Early testing = early support + healthier outcomes.

🔍 Think you’ve been exposed? Know your window period:
🧪 Different HIV tests detect the virus at different stages:
NAT (nucleic acid test): 10–33 days after exposure
Antigen/antibody test (lab-based): 18–45 days
Antigen/antibody rapid test (finger stick): 18–90 days
Antibody-only tests: 23–90 days

If you test negative but think you were recently exposed, talk to a provider about retesting or taking PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) within 72 hours.

Juneteenth is not just history—it’s a reminder to celebrate liberation, advocate for justice, and uplift Black joy every day.
