Bilingual professionals!!! Don’t give up!! We need you!!
Unfortunately there are linguistic biases in certification exams. Ironically even the one for speech language pathology.
Here’s how I recommend combatting linguistic differences so you can enter your dream career and make the difference you’ve intended to make:
🍎 Seek assistance (eg from tutors and coaches) who can help you figure out what the questions are really asking
🍎 BE PROACTIVE and seek accommodations 3-6 months before you schedule your exam. The sooner the better.
🍎 Show yourself GRACE for what you don’t know. Congratulate yourself for conquering one of the hardest cognitive skills: bilingualism
Any other tips for combatting linguistic bias? Let us know in the comments!

Why do Black students get misunderstood in school?
Black students get expelled 3x more likely than their White peers.
Black forms of communication has been used against Black children as a way to discipline them beyond what is warranted.
Unfortunately this places them on track to go to prison (hence, the school-to-prison pipeline).
If you are not from the Black community, I recommend practicing cultural humility to get curious about different Black communication styles.
This is especially important if you are a speech-language pathologist and educator. We can become crucial advocates for Black children and prevent over-expulsion of our kiddos of color.

Did you know about the school to prison pipeline?
Can I be real with you?
I struggle with implicit biases (too)!
I’ll be a work in progress for the rest of my days.
Whenever I feel triggered by people of a certain culture, I get to acknowledge these feelings and investigate them without judgement.
To me, this is the first step to releasing implicit biases!
How do you plan to challenge your implicit biases this year?

Dealing with challenging behavior from Black students?
Don’t take it personally and look at behavior from a communication perspective!
The truth: Black students are being disciplined more than their White peers for subjective offenses (e.g., eye rolling, loud talking).
I spoke about this on my Tik Tok and traumatized educators combatted this.
Look, I’ve been yelled at and disrespected by students of ALL backgrounds.
How did I repair our interactions? Showing humility, listening to what the student was really communicating, setting boundaries, and showing empathy.
This is how we create safe spaces! We might even help close the school to prison pipeline ✨

Inclusivity can be so simple.
In addition to adding my pronouns to my email, I can educate others by adding a simple link to Pronouns.org.
This website answers questions like,
✨“why is it important to use pronouns?”
✨ “what if someone makes a mistake and mispronouns someone else?”
✨ “how do I use gender inclusive language?”
