NIIW is a yearly observance to emphasize the importance of vaccinations to protect children from infectious diseases. In 2020, we saw a troubling drop in children getting vaccines due to lockdowns and staying at home to avoid the pandemic, but countless healthcare experts from the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommend keeping your child on track to prevent them contracting a life-threatening disease.

This year, healthcare leaders are also emphasizing the value of getting the COVID-19 vaccine and booster shots. It will protect you against the virus and the Omicron variants. The Pfizer BioTech vaccine is available to children aged 5 and older and there is research being developed to make it available to even younger patients.

As a family healthcare provider, I am happy to assist you if you have questions about any vaccines for infants or others. I am here as a reliable resource for you and your family.

Your health is impacted by everyday decisions, especially by what’s in your food. The benefits of a healthy diet include lowering heart disease risk and stroke by improving cholesterol levels, reducing blood pressure, managing your body weight, and controlling your blood sugar. Getting well-balanced doesn’t have to be difficult, so I included some tips from the experts.

-Include lots of vegetables and fruits. These are packed with various beneficial nutrients like antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fibers. They also help you stay full for longer periods of time!

-Swap for whole grain foods. This includes whole grain bread and crackers, brown or wild rice, quinoa, oatmeal, and hulled barley. They have fiber, protein, and vitamin B to help stay full.

-Eat foods with plenty of protein. There are lots of options for your diet: legumes, nuts, seeds, tofu, fortified soy beverages, fish, shellfish, eggs, poultry, lean red meats, and lower fat dairy products. Protein can help build and maintain bones, muscles, and skin.

-Limit intake of ultra-processed foods. Foods that are significantly altered with added ingredients lose key nutrients during processing.

-Hydrate with water as much as possible. Avoid sugary drinks and fruit juice; they won’t fill hunger or quench your thirst. Water supports health and doesn’t add calories to your diet!

If you need more advice on a healthy diet to improve your health, I will be happy to assist at Hillcroft Physicians P.A.

The staff of Hillcroft Physicians P.A. and I celebrate Minority Health Month as a time to raise awareness and discuss solutions for the health disparities racial and ethnic minority populations face. Quite a few providers at our clinic are immigrants, who sought better opportunities and a chance to give back to others. As a “medical home” for our community, we each strive to give you the best healthcare possible while also providing a safe, supportive environment.

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities set this year’s theme as “Give Your Community a Boost!” COVID-19 has been a serious threat to multiple groups of people, and the best way to protect yourself against it is to get fully vaccinated and boosted. Hillcroft Physicians P.A. provide the Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations and booster shots to patients 18 and older on Fridays. Call to make an appointment. Walk-ins are welcomed and accepted.

Holistic medicine is a method of health care that considers your whole person—body, mind, and soul. It is a good idea to teach kids early on about how their health includes everything about them. Here are my top 5 recommended practices to incorporate into your lifestyle to help your family to live a healthier life:

-Sleep hygiene. Sleep helps the brain and the body recharge. The CDC reports children ages 5-12 should get 9-12 hours of sleep, teenagers 8-10 hours, and adults 7 or more.

-Mindful eating. Listen to your body’s signals for when you are hungry and when you are full. Slower eating is also helpful for digestion, hydration, weight loss/management, and satisfaction.

-Get outside. Spending time in nature is shown to reduce stress hormones and lower blood pressure. A quick walk or even sitting in your backyard is an easy way to include this in your daily routine.

-Move your body. Take time to strengthen your heart and muscles by intentionally moving your body. If going to the gym isn’t right for you, find physical activities that you love and look forward to doing.

-Practice gratitude. Maintaining a positive attitude is reported to improve heart health and lower rates of depression. Write down what you’re grateful for or express words of gratitude to those around you.

The staff at Hillcroft Physicians, P.A. and I practice holistic medicine to treat you and your family.

Yes, the CDC recommends that everyone from 5 years old and older get vaccinated to fight against COVID-19. Currently, only the Pfizer-BioTech is recommended for children ages 5-12 years old, and everyone 12 years and older should receive a booster shot.

Here is your friendly reminder on the importance of sleep for your health. When you get a proper amount of sleep, your brain is rewiring to learn new information, boosting healthy brain functions, and maintaining your physical health. However, sleep deprivation can damage your everyday life by impacting your relationships with people and how you interact with the world.

If you are experiencing difficulty with sleep, you can make an appointment with me at Hillcroft Physicians, P.A. for an evaluation.
