So last week I ran the Spartan Beast 21k. This was my 7th spartan race and my 2nd trifecta, yet somehow was one of the hardest races I've ever run. This makes me question why I even do this to myself. Well, here are my reasons for those curious enough to keep reading.
1. It motivates me. I've never been the strongest, the fastest, or the toughest guy out there. My physique has always been middle of the road at best. I have to fight, push and earn every ounce of muscle on my body- which still isn't much. Obstacle runs give me a reason to train and a reason to want to be fit and in shape.
2. It tests me. It's easy to be complacent, and easy to assume "I could never do that." While racing last week, there were obstacles I looked at and thought "Nope- no way I'll make it." Yet I tried, jumped, climbed, and omg, I did the thing. These races have been a stark reminder for me that we never know what we are capable of until we push ourselves to try.
3. It gets me outside. I spend far too much time indoors. Even when I travel I go to restaurants, museums and other commercial establishments. I love getting to see the awesome landscapes these locations have to offer. Next year, I hope to run 3 more races and complete another trifecta. I'm super stoked to travel around the country to see what other landscapes I can conquer.
