Thinking about a hair transplant? 🛑 Don’t overlook medical therapy.

Although medical therapy is not a requirement for a hair transplant procedure, I strongly recommend it to all of my patients. Surgery is a method to redistribute hair to areas of thinning and balding. It does not address the underlying cause of hair loss 📉.

Medical therapy is the only treatment that works internally in order to target the underlying cause in order to stabilize existing hair loss, promote regrowth, and maintain density.

If you are bothered enough by your hair loss to want a transplant, I think it is in your best interest to also consider medical therapy.

Bumps and moles are often harmless, but it can be frustrating when they are so visible in a picture 📸 or always snag on a necklace or sweater 🧶. I find these removals especially rewarding for patients as they usually wonder why they waited so long to do something about it ⏰.

My goal is to plan my approach so that you barely remember it was there.

🔑 A key part of my job is minimizing the appearance of scars. While my primary focus is meticulous surgical technique during the initial closure, early intervention and prevention are the gold standards ✨. A lot of patients use or ask me about Mederma, but almost everyone is surprised to learn that the active ingredient is onion extract 🧅(specifically quercetin within onion extract). The use of onions for medicinal purposes has a long history, but the discovery of crushing onions to reduce blistering and inflammation in burns was documented in the 1500s. Fast forward to now and we have seen how quercetin within onion extract is:

▪️anti-inflammatory
▪️antimicrobial
▪️reduces disorganized collagen production

There are still more products to consider based on current clinical data. I work with every patient on a tailored strategy to create the best outcome for every scar.

Hair Transplant Recovery: Day 1 —> Day 8

I think this is a helpful day-by-day 📆 look at the recovery period after a hair transplant. When someone decides to move forward with this procedure, they’re usually focused on the final result - what their hair will look like long-term. But there is a process in order to get there.

During the first week, redness and scabbing are noticeable and completely normal. Once the scabs resolve — typically around 8-14 days - most people are socially recovered and comfortable being out in public again.

It still takes time to get to the tinal result as the transplanted hairs take time to grow. The outcome is well worth the wait ⏰

Before ➡️ After

Every reconstructive case is different. As the surgeon, you have to take stock of available tissue and where best to hide scars. I thought this case was a great example of optimizing available tissue and smart scar placement. In this case, we use nearby hair-bearing brow tissue that is advanced forward ⏩ into the area of scar tissue, and all incisions are hidden within the brow.

Although the new brow is slightly narrower than the opposite side, the human eye 👀 is not drawn to this difference. And, if needed, we can always do an eyebrow hair transplant for these cases.

What you need to know about ferritin levels & hair growth 📝

Ferritin is a protein that stores and releases iron as needed by your body. Current normal lab values do not take into account optimal levels that are needed for hair growth. There is not a perfect number for everyone but some studies suggest aiming for 40-50 and some even suggest above 70. If ferritin is too high, this can also lead to serious health issues so working with a specialist is highly recommended.

Ferritin is not the only vitamin 💊 deficiency involved in hair loss so an important message that I want to get across is that you shouldn’t increase your ferritin because it worked for someone else as YOU also need a full work-up so that you are supplementing for the right targets 🎯 for your hair.

Common misconceptions ❌⬇️

I’m here to talk about some common misconceptions that continue to come up in my clinic that I think that everyone should know. Here are the products on my avoid list:

- Vitamin E
- Hydrogen Peroxide
- Rubbing alcohol on wounds
- Physical exfoliants

Big takeaways: Sun protection is # 1️⃣ when it comes to scar care. The best way to take care of cuts and scrapes is with gentle soap and water and ointment like Vaseline or Aquaphor.

Are there any other misconceptions that you used to swear by?

YES or NO? ‼️ Let’s settle this. 🤔

Does this need another layer of sutures to the skin? Let me know what you think. I’ll explain my reasoning in another video to come.

Happy Tox Tuesday! Sharing this subtle but powerful following Botox to the crow’s feet. Her eyes look smoother and brighter ✨ following this quick in office treatment. Our eyes are the first area on the face to show signs of aging, so it’s important that we start our regimen early ⏰!

Topical options: Sunscreen ☀️is my #1 topical option! Always make sure you apply whenever you are driving or in the sun. Other options range from topical retinoids (make sure they are appropriate for the eye as it is a sensitive area) to moisturizers to products tailored to different eye concerns such as darkness or fine lines. If you have a specific concern, we can talk to you more about the options in our office!

Non-surgical options:
Botox/Dysport 💉- best option for non-surgical brow lift or for treatment of crow’s feet or even fine lines under the eyes.
Filler- best option for restoring volume and camouflaging any hollows or shadows around the eyes.
Resurfacing- this includes microneedling, chemical peels, and laser treatments. All will boost collagen in the area, but some are better options depending on patient concern and schedule. Microneedling has minimal downtime and can improve crepey skin and fine lines. Chemical peels and lasers have more downtime but more result after 1 treatment.

Surgical options:
Blepharoplasty- this is a surgical treatment for either the upper or lower eyelids and both can be treated at the same time! For upper eyelids, excess skin is surgically trimmed and removed. For lower eyelids with bags or puffiness, the fat pads that contribute to this are trimmed or repositioned and excess skin is also removed. This procedure is performed under local or iv sedation.

Brow lift- this is a surgical treatment that addresses if a drop ⬇️ in brow position has contributed to heaviness of the upper eyelids. The brows are surgically repositioned using different approaches and incisions tailored to patient characteristics to give the best aesthetic outcome.

If you are looking to brighten and refresh your eye area, come into our office to see which option is right for you!
