๐ŸŒŸ Character Strong Campaign Continues! ๐ŸŒŸ

We are excited to continue our district-wide "Character Strong" initiative, led by the Dickinson Gator Wellness Center! Each month, we focus on a different character trait that reflects the values we want to instill in our students, families, and staff.

September's Character Trait: RESPECT โค๏ธ

Respect means seeing value in all people and things and treating them with care. Itโ€™s about recognizing the worth in everyone and everything around us, and acting with consideration and kindness in all our interactions.

Letโ€™s work together to practice respect in our classrooms, hallways, and community every day. By showing respect, we create a welcoming and supportive environment where everyone feels valued and cared for. ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŠ

We are incredibly proud to announce that Kim Jackson, the counselor at Calder Elementary, is the recipient of the prestigious Walter Kase Educator Excellence Award. This award is presented annually to three exceptional educators who have made outstanding contributions to fostering an environment of inclusivity, respect, and understanding in their schools.

Mrs. Jacksonโ€™s unwavering commitment to creating a safe and supportive atmosphere that celebrates diversity and rejects prejudice embodies the spirit of this award. Her work directly aligns with the legacy of Walter Kase, a Holocaust survivor whose dedication to educating young people, educators, and community leaders about the dangers of hate and the importance of love, respect, and empathy continues to inspire.

We applaud Mrs. Jackson for her exceptional dedication to nurturing an environment where all students can thrive. Her passion for promoting understanding and kindness is truly deserving of this honor.

Mayโ€™s Character Trait of the Month: CREATIVITY

At Dickinson ISD, weโ€™re celebrating Creativity โ€” using your imagination to make something new or solve a problem.

Whether itโ€™s thinking outside the box, expressing yourself through art or writing, or finding new ways to help others, our Gators use creativity to shine in their own unique ways.

Letโ€™s continue to inspire, explore, and lead with imagination!

The Galveston County Sheriffโ€™s Office and Dickinson ISD is proud to recognize a student for his heroic actions.

On March 13, 2025, Edward Osorto, a student at McAdams Jr. High School, exhibited remarkable courage when he saved a fellow student from choking. Edward noticed another student struggling to breathe due to a piece of gum lodged in their throat. Acting swiftly, Edward performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the obstruction and allowing the student to breathe again.

Edward received a standing ovation at the Dickinson ISD school board meeting tonight in recognition of his lifesaving efforts.

Dickinson ISD Gator Wellness

In 2018-19, Dickinson ISD applied for the Rebuild Texas Fund Grant and in August 2019, we were awarded the grant, which gives DISD access to over a million dollars in funding. The Rebuild Texas Fund grant is designed to help Dickinson holistically address the mental and emotional health needs of its students from birth to graduation. The project is designed to help students, parents, teachers, and staff recovery from Hurricane Harvey and develop skills to improve their resilience to future traumas. This project will provide Dickinson ISD with a number of supports ranging from technical assistance in designing and implementing the program, funding to add staff, numerous professional development opportunities for our staff and development of a sustainability plan.

This project enabled Dickinson ISD to put in place a Social Emotional Learning (SEL) framework through a variety of partnerships with:

  • Mental Health America of Greater Houston (MHA),

  • Hackett Center at the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute (MMHPI), and
