Celebrating tradition and history in the first week of the New Year at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake

During the first week of the New Year, our residents at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake celebrated Three Kings Day (The Three Wise Men) on Tuesday, January 6. Residents enjoyed learning the story of the Three Wise Men and found it very interesting to explore traditions from different religions and cultures while reflecting on the past.

As part of the celebration, everyone enjoyed the traditional King Cake, known in Spanish as La Rosca de Reyes—a meaningful and delicious way to honor this special tradition.

Moments like these encourage cultural appreciation, spark memories, and create joyful connections through learning and shared experiences.

Prepared with purpose and joy!

Our Party Committee at Apex Oaks at Clear Lake helped prepare a beautiful New Year’s Eve celebration, complete with sparkling wine and cheerful toasts to welcome the New Year.

Using our Montessori approach, residents took on meaningful social roles—sharing ideas, making choices, and preparing what they felt was important for the celebration. When Stephanie, our Activities Assistant, asked what they would like to prepare, residents were excited to participate and proudly contribute to the planning and setup.

These moments of involvement and decision-making help promote independence, confidence, and social connection—making every celebration truly resident-led and meaningful.

Second week of the New Year, and we’re still taking a walk down memory lane—celebrating all the wonderful moments from 2025!

This past year was filled with fun, learning, and meaningful connections through our Montessori-based activities. Our residents enjoyed hands-on experiences designed to focus on their strengths, encourage independence, and spark joy.

From creative projects and sensory activities to daily life skills and social engagement, each activity was thoughtfully planned by Maria Villanueva our Activity Director to promote confidence, purpose, and cognitive stimulation.

We are so proud of the smiles, achievements, and special moments created throughout the year.

At Apex Oaks, we believe every resident deserves a meaningful and fulfilling quality of life. 💙

Caring for individuals with dementia can come with challenges, including agitation and confusion. Through our Montessori Methods approach, we take the time to learn each resident’s life story, interests, and abilities so we can create personalized programs that honor who they are.

Betty is a beautiful example of the power of procedural memory. She played the piano when she was younger, but as her dementia progressed, she lost that connection. By focusing on procedural memory—skills stored deep in the brain—we reintroduced the piano step by step.

The Montessori Methods approach supports memory by emphasizing procedural skills (like dressing, zipping, and familiar routines) and sensory engagement. By breaking tasks into small, repeatable steps, we help residents rebuild confidence, independence, and a sense of purpose.

At Apex Oaks at Clear Lake, we don’t focus on what our residents have lost—we celebrate what they can still do.
