Texas Child Psychiatry Access Network - CPAN

Texas Child Psychiatry Access Network - CPAN Free and trusted mental health resource team for pediatric and perinatal health clinicians in Texas.

Texas Child Psychiatry Access Network (CPAN) offers no-cost, clinician-to-clinician consultations related to specific patients or general questions as well as care coordination and training to pediatric health clinicians to assist with identifying and treating mental and behavioral health concerns in child and youth patients across the state. Texas Perinatal Psychiatry Access Network (PeriPAN) now extends these services to clinicians serving pregnant and postpartum women with mental health needs. Both programs can be accessed by calling the same hotline number: 888-901-2726

CPAN and PeriPAN are initiatives of the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium (TCMHCC), which was created by the 86th Texas Legislature to leverage the expertise and capacity of Texas health-related institutions of higher education to address urgent mental health challenges and improve the mental health care system in the state. Families trust pediatricians with their kids’ mental health.

86% of parents are likely to turn to their pediatrician for mental health concerns, especially when other supports are hard to access. But many pediatricians report gaps in training, especially around su***de prevention. Child and adolescent psychiatrist Cesar A. Soutullo MD, PhD, said after years of working with kids facing depression and suicidal thoughts, SAFETY-A transformed how he cares for them. Sign up for one of CPAN’s upcoming sessions here: https://tcmhcc.utsystem.edu/safety-a/

As a UTHealth Houston professor and SAFETY-A instructor he appreciates how the training helps clinicians “shift from just deciding on hospitalization to actively building coping skills and safety plans—even in a short visit.”

“The conversation becomes: How can I help you stay safe until we meet again? That shift is powerful. Teaching this to providers feels like true prevention,” Dr. Soutullo said.

Maternal mental health conditions are common, and we want you to feel comfortable approaching mental and behavioral health screening much like your existing workflows for other comorbidities such as gestational diabetes, and we can help you determine when to refer a patient for specialized care.

Our PeriPAN Perinatal Mental Health Toolkit has resources for obstetric clinicians, patients, and their families to help them engage in safety planning and know the signs an emergency intervention may be needed: https://tcmhcc.utsystem.edu/peripan-toolkit/

(Note: CPAN/PeriPAN do not provide emergency care. Make sure your patients and their families know to call or text 988 during a mental health crisis. For moms, the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline is also free, confidential, and available 24/7 in English and Spanish by calling or texting 1-833-TLC-MAMA.)

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends an uncomplicated approach, much like your existing workflows for referring out to specialized care: “Most pediatric primary care providers (P*Ps) are not pulmonologists; however, P*Ps regularly treat youth with asthma and support them in managing symptoms. If a P*P encounters a patient with a complicated case of asthma, they refer that patient to a pulmonologist.”
