Grateful for the time to disconnect + reset this past weekend. 🙂 I love being able to take time off when needed AND I love coming back to work after some time away.

I also think Santa Fe has become one of my favorite places. 😌

Ready for a full week ahead 💛

There is SO much that goes into a therapy session aside from just listening 🩵. We are constantly tailoring our approach and pulling from theories that would be the best fit for the clients unique circumstances, managing countertransference, bracketing our own assumptions/experiences to truly encounter and be with the client, holding space for our own feelings that come up, working through imposter syndrome, balancing directness and challenging our clients with empathy and validation, staying attuned to the clients needs, redirecting when we get off topic or when the client might be avoiding, tuning into what isn’t being said/body language/nonverbal communication, etc.

Therapy is never just listening. It’s holding space + so much more. 🩷 and yes, we think about our clients outside of session, get attached to clients, and miss them when we are no longer working together.

In existential-analysis, we spend a lot of time talking about how to nurture and live out one’s values. Closeness with one’s self is a must for this, and this includes the willingness and openness to one’s feelings, likes, needs, longings, and desires.

Feelings always point to a value and tell us what’s important to us. Feelings tell us what makes us feel alive and/or what gets in the way of our quality of life.

And we must take the time to turn towards ourselves (and life) and be in contact with these feelings. This is how we strengthen our relationship to ourselves and cultivate a positive relationship to life.

How do you develop closeness with yourself and stay connected to what matters to you? Are you able to take the time to slow down, be with your feelings, and nurture your values? 🤍

A positive relationship to life starts with a healthy, balanced relationship with one’s self.

Such a challenge for so many of us (including myself).

Rather than resisting, first try to be with and accept.

Acceptance is the first step towards our freedom. 🫶

This has been one of my favorite topics that we’ve covered in my existential-analysis training program so far, and I wanted to share some of my main takeaways 🤍. This resonates so deeply on a personal level and professional level. As therapists, we learn about values and how to incorporate that into our work with clients, but I’ve found that EA just takes it so much deeper.

I hope this resonates with you 🫶.

Meaningful pleasure feels good, is connected to your values, and leads you in a direction that you want your life to go in. Meaningless pleasure feels good (or helps you avoid discomfort) but isn’t connected to your values. It leads to stagnation - not growth.
