Happy Surgical Tech Week to the incredible and vital heroes of the OR.
The history of the Surgical Technologist is truly remarkable -
The role of the surgical technologist has its origins in World War I and World War II when the U.S. military urgently required trained medics to assist surgeons in the operating rooms.
During World War I, nurses were needed to work at medical stations, leading to the requirement for trained medics, known as operating room technicians (ORTs), to support surgeons.
Following the Korean War, a shortage of operating room nurses in civilian hospitals led to the hiring of ex-medics and ex-corpsmen to fill the gap.
In 1973, the position of ORT transitioned into the surgical technologist role. This profession became standardized and has evolved into the crucial role it plays in modern healthcare. The surgical technologist is truly the right (or left) hand of the surgeon.
