To meet the changing needs of adults 65 and older, Harris Health has three health centers that provide personalized geriatric services to help older adults live their lives to the fullest. The centers are open two days a week, each with a physician, nurse practitioner, social worker and medical assistant working as a team. In addition to vital signs monitoring and medical evaluations, patients receive special fall and cognitive assessments and referrals to extra resources as needed.

Harris Health Baytown Health Center and Harris Health Settegast Health Center, staffed with doctors from the McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, have both earned Age-Friendly designation from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement for our commitment to providing reliable care for older adults. The centers practice evidenced-based care known as the 4Ms—What Matters, Medication, Mentation and Mobility.

Physicians from Baylor College of Medicine have also joined this important effort, providing care and services at Harris Health Vallbona Health Center, our newest Age-Friendly location.

Harris Health is building a new 12-story, Level I trauma-capable hospital on the campus of Harris Health Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital?

The new hospital will have 390 private patient rooms and the potential to expand to 450. The hospital is designed to Level I-trauma standards with plans to become the third adult Level I trauma hospital in Harris County and the first such hospital outside of the Texas Medical Center. The unnamed new hospital promises to be a monumental city landmark and trauma care leader not only for neighborhoods of northeast Houston and Harris County, but across the southeast Texas region.

As we celebrate our nation’s independence, be sure to do it safely. According to a study by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about 42% of the emergency department-treated fireworks-related injuries were for burns. To prevent injuries, don’t allow children to use fireworks alone, keep water close in case of a fire, after lighting fireworks make your distance immediately, and never use fireworks while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Harris Health has a Hospital at Home Program? In February 2024, Harris Health launched its new Hospital at Home program, which provides hospital level care to certain patients in their own homes.

This program was originally made possible by a waiver from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow hospitals to treat patients at home to reduce overcrowding.

Today, the Hospital at Home program saves urgently needed beds in Harris Health hospitals and clinics while providing more personalized care for patients in the comfort of their own homes. Patients receive visits from nurses twice a day, as well as daily virtual or in-person check-ins with their doctor.

The program has seen significant cost savings compared to traditional inpatient care. In its first year, the Hospital at Home program served 100 patients, with plans to expand to 250 patients in the coming year. This innovative program is currently the only one of its kind in the Greater Houston area.​
