Trigger point massage is a therapeutic technique targeting hyperirritable spots in muscle tissue. These trigger points are tight knots within muscle fibers that cause local pain and often refer discomfort to distant areas.

The massage involves applying sustained pressure directly to these points using fingers, thumbs, or tools. Practitioners typically hold pressure for thirty seconds to several minutes, which helps release the contracted muscle fibers and restore normal blood flow.

This technique effectively treats chronic pain, headaches, and muscle tension. Active trigger points cause spontaneous pain, while latent ones only hurt when pressed. The therapy works by interrupting the pain cycle, improving circulation, and allowing muscles to relax. Common treatment areas include the neck, shoulders, back, and hips. Patients may experience temporary soreness after sessions, but this usually subsides within a day.

Regular trigger point massage can prevent pain recurrence and improve overall muscle function and flexibility throughout the body.
