I saw a post from Kate Northrup the other day that caught my eye. It said:
“Burnout is not your fault, but it’s your responsibility.”
Agh, the truth of it stung a little. It’s way easier to complain about burnout than to actually do something about it, right?!
Unfortunately, she's right, it IS our responsibility to take care of our bodies and minds so that we can show up fully for ourselves, our dreams and passions, and for each other.
And it's often when we feel like we have the least amount of time for self-care that we need it the most. No matter what our goals are, I know for a fact we won't get there on empty.
So...how can you keep yourself from burning out? Here are a few of my favorite ways:
1. Move your body: a walk, a yoga class, dancing around the living room - whatever gets you out of your seat.
2. Spend time in nature: whether it's 5 or 50 minutes, try to spend some time outdoors and let the sounds and sights of nature soothe your nervous system.
3. Turn it off: your phone, the news, Yellowstone, social media, Candy Crush...give yourself intentional time off any and all screens and stimulating information.
4. Schedule fun: literally schedule time for activities that make you happy, like meeting a friend for lunch, golfing, or baking a cake. Don't just pencil them in - commit with ink and don't sell yourself out!
5. Build in breaks: rushing from one thing to the next is super stressful - and ultimately unproductive! Instead, add enough time in between items in your agenda to fully process after each meeting/task and show up with a clear and focused mind to the next.
