A brain aneurysm can happen to anyone at any time. Do you know the signs?
A brain aneurysm is a bulge in a blood vessel in the brain that can rupture, leading to a life-threatening hemorrhage. While some aneurysms show no symptoms until they burst, others may cause warning signs.
Know the potential warning signs of an unruptured aneurysm:
- Persistent headache
- Dilated pupil
- Changes in vision or double vision
- Pain above or behind one eye
- Weakness, numbness, or paralysis on one side of the face
- Seek immediate medical attention and call 911 if you or someone you know experiences the sudden onset of a "thunderclap headache" – the worst headache of your life – as this could indicate a ruptured aneurysm.
Early detection and treatment can be critical. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about your risk factors (like high blood pressure, smoking, family history).
