Many people with brain injuries — whether from sports or other causes — experience lingering symptoms such as aggression, depression, and personality changes. These challenges are often misattributed solely to mental health, when in fact there are underlying neurological causes driving the behavior. Too often, individuals are told there’s nothing that can be done. At HNBC, we know that’s not true. We’ve seen remarkable recoveries through our treatment services, and we’re now launching the Houston Athletes Concussion Center to expand these resources and better meet this critical need.

In this episode, HNBC introduces the Houston Athletes Concussion Center (HACC) — a new program at Houston Neuroscience Brain Center designed to close the gap in post-concussion recovery and athlete brain health. Alexandra Roark, LCSW, BCN is joined by Dr. Ronald J. Swatzyna, Director and Chief Scientist at HNBC and Founder of Clinical NeuroAnalytics, and Cortni Emanuel, LPC-Associate, neurofeedback clinician, and former Division I All-American athlete.

Together, they explore:

The need for better concussion care – Why chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and post-concussion symptoms often go unaddressed in traditional medicine.

The HNBC approach – How qEEG brain mapping, neurofeedback, transcranial photobiomodulation (PBM) target the root causes of brain dysfunction, not just symptoms.

Return-to-play readiness – HACC’s protocol addresses cognitive function, vision and sensory processing, emotional regulation, and physical coordination.

Baseline testing advantage – How establishing an athlete’s performance profile before injury allows for faster, more accurate intervention if a concussion occurs.

Early intervention – Why catching subtle brain changes early could change the trajectory for athletes, potentially preventing tragedies linked to repeated head trauma.

Key Insights from:

Dr. Swatzyna explains how EEG and brain mapping reveal hidden neurological damage and why younger athletes are at greater risk for long-term effects.

Cortni Emanuel shares her personal motivation for creating HACC and how the program empowers athletes to recover fully — physically, mentally, and emotionally.

HNBC’s Statement:
The Houston Athletes Concussion Center is redefining recovery by giving athletes access to tools that track how the brain functions under real pressure and actively promote healing. The mission: Early detection. Faster intervention. Full return-to-play readiness.

Another great post created by our research team: Gayatri & Ria || research findings suggest a correlation between Alzheimer’s and microglia. Photobiomodulation has shown to improve microglia which suggests it may be an intervention for this disease.
