Even if they don’t respect you, your culture, your background, or even understand you… if it doesn’t break your morals, your values, or your mission - then 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲.

Because not every battle is about resistance.
Some battles are about strategy.

So play it.
And when the moment comes,

Understanding why someone did what they did doesn’t mean it didn’t hurt.

You can know someone’s trauma, upbringing, or mental health struggle and still hold them accountable.

Empathy and accountability can exist in the same breath.

You can say,
“I get it now… but it still wasn’t okay.”
Because context is not a free pass.
It gives you insight, not immunity.

Healing doesn’t mean erasing harm.
Growth doesn’t mean gaslighting yourself into pretending it didn’t happen.

So, if you’ve ever found yourself justifying someone else’s behavior to make your pain easier to sit with…

Read this again.

That explains it.
But it doesn’t excuse it.

Today, I attended my niece’s friend’s birthday party, and I think I enjoyed it just as much as the kids! One of the highlights was meeting an incredible group of firefighters and getting a firsthand look at what they carry...literally and figuratively.

I had the opportunity to wear their full gear, and I was shocked by the weight - nearly 80 pounds of protective equipment, tools, and attachments. And that was just standing still. I can only imagine what it takes to run, climb, and respond under pressure with all of that on.

I’ve always respected the work firefighters do, but today, my admiration reached a new level. I got a small glimpse of the physical demands, and it reminded me that the emotional and mental weight they carry is just as heavy.

Thank you, Soror Pauline, for making this experience possible. I applaud you. I admire you. I honor you...and all of the firefighters of our country. 🙏🏾

And that Gucci cake? Jarrell, you snapped. The detail, the FIVE flavors - absolute perfection! You brought my dream to life. 💚

This was more than a birthday party, it was a celebration of life, love, legacy, and purpose.

The vibe? Perfect.
The music? Immaculate.
The energy? Unmatched.
The love? Overflowing.

This is exactly how I wanted to honor another year on this Earth - with the people who mean the world to me, near and far. I’m still soaking it all in.

And let me tell you what love really looks like…
Instead of just gifts for me, I asked my loved ones to help me pour into something greater: mental health programming for students at my alma mater, Xavier University of Louisiana. 🤍💛

Half of all monetary gifts went straight to that mission - and because of their generosity, over $1,200 will be sent to Xavier. YES, you read that right! My tribe - certified dope humans. Every. Single One.

This is love.
This is purpose.
This is legacy.

I’m a proud 〽️ICHIGAN fan. I BLEED maize and blue. Always have, always will.

But during the 1999–2000 season… I had another team I rooted for. Not just because they were good. Not just because they were from Michigan. But because they were ours.

THE FLINTSTONES.

Mateen Cleaves. Morris “Mo Pete” Peterson. Charlie Bell.

3 guys from my hometown - Flint, Michigan - who grew up playing together since elementary school. Their brotherhood was more than basketball. Their loyalty to each other was unmatched. What they brought to the court wasn’t just skill; it was heart, unity, and Flint grit.

I remember being in med school, exhausted from rotations, and still glued to every second of that NCAA tourney run. Watching them play wasn’t just exciting..it was emotional! They made our city PROUD. And when they lifted that 2000 NCAA Championship trophy, they weren’t just champions for Michigan State… they were champions for Flint.

And now, to see Jason Richardson, a key part of that team and a Saginaw native from right down the road, cheering on his son, Jase 25 years later… it’s poetic. It’s generational. It’s Michigan history coming full circle. Honestly… it’s legendary.

Yes, I will always ride for my Wolverines. 💛💙 But I will forever give respect to Coach Tom Izzo and the Spartans squad that gave Flint its shine...it's 'one shining moment.'

This is where I’m from. This is who we are.

🎉🎈🎂 Happy 72nd Birthday to the divine Ms. Chaka Khan - an icon, a truth-teller, a healer.

Some voices entertain.
Hers? It awakens.

Six years ago, I had the honor of standing beside her. And even now, I can still feel the vibration of that moment. Chaka doesn’t just perform; she commands space. She has the kind of presence that makes time pause.

Her music raised us. Her voice walked us through heartbreak and celebration, growth and reflection. But it’s her transparency that moves me the most.

Chaka has never hidden behind her greatness. She’s been real about her battles - with addiction, with healing, with mental health. And that level of honesty? That’s what makes her unforgettable.

She’s shown us that power doesn’t mean perfection. It means truth. That healing isn’t linear. And that even in the spotlight, you can still choose to be human first. 💯

In a world quick to silence struggle, Chaka gave us something sacred: permission to be whole, even when we’re hurting.

So today, I celebrate more than her music. I honor her ministry. Because whether it was a lyric, a note, or a brave confession, Chaka has always given us permission to feel... and keep going.

🚨 MYTH ALERT: "GOOD GRADES MEAN YOU CAN’T HAVE ADHD"

Let’s slash this dangerous lie right now, because too many people are suffering in silence due to misinformation!

I’ve had patients tell me their doctors dismissed their ADHD because they got good grades. That is an absolute LIE. And as The MD with ADHD™, I know it firsthand.

I was an all-A student in middle school. I made honor roll throughout my entire education. I even became a double-board certified psychiatrist. But guess what?

I failed my medical boards FIVE TIMES.

Step 1? Failed twice.

Step 2? Failed once.

Step 3? Failed twice.

Why? Because back then, no one considered ADHD; not for a student who made straight A’s. My struggles weren’t even on the radar because the system equated academic success with neurotypical functioning. And that is DEAD WRONG.

Doctors, clinicians, educators-LISTEN UP.
If you’re telling people they can’t have ADHD because they perform well in school, you are misinforming them. ADHD is not about intelligence or potential. It’s about how the brain regulates focus, executive function, and task management; all of which can be masked by coping mechanisms, parental support, structure, or sheer willpower.

But masking only works for so long. And when it breaks down? That’s when bright, talented individuals are left feeling like failures—wondering why they’re struggling so much when they were once "so smart."

ADHD does not discriminate based on GPA. It affects the gifted, the talented, the overachievers, and the straight-A students—just as much as it affects those who struggle academically.

Happy National Women Physicians Day!

Today, we honor the incredible women who have dedicated their lives to the practice of medicine. Women who have shattered ceilings, challenged norms, and redefined what it means to heal.

For centuries, the medical field was dominated by men, but trailblazers like Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the U.S. in 1849, paved the way for generations of female physicians to follow. Despite facing relentless barriers, women in medicine have fought for their place; not just to exist in this space but to thrive and lead in it. Today, we stand on the shoulders of those pioneers, continuing their legacy with resilience, expertise, and compassion.

But let’s also take a moment to recognize that not all physicians wear white coats. Some of us, like psychiatrists, operate in a space where healing looks different. Where our tools aren’t scalpels and stethoscopes but empathy, deep listening, and the ability to guide patients through the complexities of mental health. We may not be in the OR, but we are still saving lives. We see our patients in their most vulnerable moments, helping them reclaim their minds, their peace, and their ability to thrive.

To every woman physician-whether you're in the ER, the OR, a clinic, a research lab, or providing care from a quiet office, we celebrate you. Your work, your sacrifices, and your impact matter. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
