It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr. Charles McCollum, professor in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery. He died the evening of Monday, Dec. 8.

Charley joined the department as a faculty member in 1966 and had served as acting chair, as well as interim chief of both the Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy and the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Dr. McCollum ran general surgery as program director for 23 years. His research focus was on non-invasive studies for the diagnosis of peripheral vascular disease using ultrasound technology.

After completing his medical degree at UTMB Galveston, Dr. McCollum started in internal medicine at the hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, then completed general surgery residency at BCM, followed by a thoracic surgery residency. As a professor at Baylor, he worked with Dr. Michael E. DeBakey, Dr. George Noon, and Dr. Ted Dietrich.

His leadership roles included acting chair, vice chair for education, acting division chief and program and director for vascular surgery and thoracic surgery. He also served as graduate medical education committee chair.

For 23 years, Dr. McCollum served as the program director for the general surgery residency program, holding the Olga Keith Weiss Endowed Chair of Surgery. Dr. McCollum received numerous awards throughout his career including 50 years BCM Service, Alumni Lifetime Achievement, Michael E. DeBakey Distinguished Service and Michael E. DeBakey International Surgical Society.

Recently, the department established the Charles H. McCollum, M.D., Endowed Chair, which will support the department’s educational activities for its residents, fellows and trainees and recognized his 64 years of service.

On This Day in Texas History

In 1964, right here in Houston, Dr. Michael DeBakey and his team performed the world’s first successful coronary artery bypass graft, a breakthrough that changed heart surgery forever. Alongside pioneers like Denton Cooley, Houston quickly became the epicenter of revolutionary advances in cardiovascular medicine, from treating aneurysms and congenital defects to tackling vascular disease.

Just a few years later, in 1968, Cooley and his team completed the first successful heart transplant in the United States. Their patient lived 204 days, an astonishing milestone at the time. By the late 1980s, one-year survival rates climbed to 80%, and many patients have gone on to live a decade or more with their new hearts. Today, heart transplantation is a standard lifesaving procedure, with over 3,000 performed worldwide each year.
