As Texas reports an increase in whooping cough cases, Tina Philip, DO, told KVUE-TV children – especially infants – are most vulnerable to the disease. Approximately 85% of whooping cough cases in Texas this year have occurred among children, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Dr. Philip, a former president of the Travis County Medical Society, also stressed the importance of staying up-to-date on Tdap and DTaP vaccines that can defend against the disease.

Texas is seeing a spike in pertussis, or whooping cough cases. "We are seeing a year-after-year trend of a significant increase in cases, when this is preventable,” said Hector Ocaranza, MD, a member of the TMA Council on Science and Public Health, in The Texas Tribune. The Tdap and DTaP vaccines provide defense against pertussis.

On This Day in Texas History

In 1964, right here in Houston, Dr. Michael DeBakey and his team performed the world’s first successful coronary artery bypass graft, a breakthrough that changed heart surgery forever. Alongside pioneers like Denton Cooley, Houston quickly became the epicenter of revolutionary advances in cardiovascular medicine, from treating aneurysms and congenital defects to tackling vascular disease.

Just a few years later, in 1968, Cooley and his team completed the first successful heart transplant in the United States. Their patient lived 204 days, an astonishing milestone at the time. By the late 1980s, one-year survival rates climbed to 80%, and many patients have gone on to live a decade or more with their new hearts. Today, heart transplantation is a standard lifesaving procedure, with over 3,000 performed worldwide each year.
