In April, a father brought his 11-year-old daughter to CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic for school vaccinations. The family, who were recent arrivals from Guatemala, came to the Clinic at the end of the day. They were instructed to return the following day and were sent home with the required vaccination paperwork to fill out.

Language was a barrier for the family with the dad speaking his native language and the daughter speaking a little Spanish. “The daughter’s vaccine record was sparse and barely legible,” said Sister Rosanne Popp, M.D. “They had a family friend who could read and write Spanish and agreed to help them fill out the forms.”

When the man and his daughter came the next day, it was clear from looking at the form the questions on the vaccine questionnaire were not fully understood. Vaccines could not be administered without the form filled out correctly and completely. Click link below to finish the story.

Recently, Darrell*, Lisa* and their three young children arrived at CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread in desperate need of help. The family had relocated to Galveston, as Darrell and Lisa were set to start promising new jobs working on the Galveston Port.

While enroute to Galveston they received a call from the employer asking if they had a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card which was required for the position. Once the employer learned they did not have one, the job offers were rescinded.

With the loss of their jobs, Darrell and Lisa no longer had a housing allowance. Their new priority was locating a safe place to stay until they figured out next steps. Due to limited funds, hotels were not an option. “Linda began to search for shelters in Galveston, and both Salvation Army and Our Daily Bread came up,” Angela Joseph, Our Daily Bread Director, said. At Salvation Army they were turned away due to both family rooms being occupied.

Upon arriving at Our Daily Bread, Darrell met with Client Navigator Johnathen Vallery and shared their story. Read on to learn the rest of the story.

In the fall, Joseph*, a 40-year-old patient, came into CHRISTUS Point of Light Clinic as a follow-up to an emergency room visit. He had recently fallen into a ravine and broke his heel. “The emergency room he visited wrapped it with an ACE wrap and recommended he follow-up with an orthopedist,” Point of Light Clinic Nurse Practitioner Beth Ryan said. “He was unable to afford one and found our clinic for his follow-up.”

During Ryan’s visit with Joseph, she could see he was in significant pain and needed the care of an orthopedist. Knowing that CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic had a volunteer orthopedist, she was able to secure an appointment with Dr. David Wolf the following week. Click link to read more.

After an almost three-year hiatus primarily due to COVID, CHRISTUS Operation San José returned to the field visiting CHRISTUS Muguerza Hospital in Chihuahua, Mexico, the location of the 2020 trip. A number of patients during 2020 required multiple surgeries which were unable to be performed due to time restrictions. The return to Chihuahua would allow the team to complete the remaining surgeries, in addition to attending to new patients. Led by program director Dr. Michael Lypka, a team of 19 medical staff performed 21 surgeries over the 7-day trip with two surgical rooms running simultaneously for three days.

A student at Our Lady of Fatima – Galena Park recently came to the CHRISTUS School Clinic with a severe allergic reaction in her eye. Medical Assistant Marikza Mendoza knew the student had a history of allergic rhinitis. Mendoza checked the student’s temperature and O2 level, called the mom, and then decided to utilize the clinic’s telemedicine. All telemedicine appointments are managed through CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic and are used most for COVID testing, rashes, allergy symptoms or upper respiratory illnesses.

“Telemedicine in schools offers numerous benefits, including improved access to healthcare for students who may not otherwise have easy access to medical services,” Dr. Nancy Kwan, St. Mary’s Clinic physician and the School Clinics telemedicine physician, said. Click link to learn more.

Thanks to the Houston Chronicle's Matt Young for his story on our Spring Luncheon with Houston Texans Quarterback C.J. Stroud. The event raised over $290,000 in funds for CHRISTUS Our Daily Bread and their work with Galveston's homeless.

C.J. Stroud says this has been his first real offseason and he's enjoyed it by traveling out of the country for the first time and trying out golf.

Volunteers needed! As we recognize National Nutrition Month, one partnership is key to the health of many of our patients. Since 2021, CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic has partnered with Houston Food Bank in the Food For Change/Food Rx program. This program provides nutritious food to diabetics and other groups with special healthcare needs. The Houston Food Bank trailer comes twice a month to St. Mary’s Clinic and provides direct access to patients who might otherwise not be able to access a Food Bank site due to location or hours.

We need volunteers for the distribution days – the second and fourth Fridays of the month. Visit the link for more details and to fill out a volunteer form.

Through community outreach partnerships and coordination of CHRISTUS Foundation for HealthCare programs, two women are now on a path to a healthier future with their children.

Last month at the HISD Sunrise Center Milby location and at the Farias Early Childhood School, CHRISTUS Healthy Living Mobile Clinics were on-site to offer free health screenings. During these visits, two patients were identified as having extremely high blood pressure. Both were in need of immediate assistance.

As the Greater Houston area continues to recover from the fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic, at-risk communities are struggling the most to rebound. Maintaining or finding employment and sustaining safe and affordable housing can be difficult. Dealing with new health issues or exacerbated chronic issues related to the COVID pandemic and lack of food access due to the economic downturn increase life stresses. These factors directly affect an individual’s health outcome, productivity, and longevity.

CHRISTUS St. Mary’s Clinic is breaking down barriers by considering these various factors, or social determinants of health, when treating a patient and addressing their needs. “For St. Mary’s Clinic, I like to focus on how the combination of medical services and social services contribute to healthier communities for the patients we serve” Sister Rosanne Popp, M.D., St. Mary’s Clinic Medical Director, said.
