He never smoked. He stayed active. He did everything right.

Then came a diagnosis that changed everything.

Carlos Lopez… Army Airborne Ranger, teacher, and cancer survivor…drove 400 miles round-trip for every appointment at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston. And he'd do it again.

"I found the care at the Houston VA to be so great, that I chose to travel more than three hours one way for my appointments."

His story is one of survival, trust, and a landmark VA study that examines the treatment of throat cancer in Veterans.

A 9-hospital, 20-year study. Nearly 900 Veterans. A future powered by AI and precision oncology.

Our department hosted the annual Skull Base Rodeo last week.
For the sinus and anterior skull base portion of the course, we were honored to welcome Dr. Nithin Adappa from the University of Pennsylvania, where he serves as Fellowship Director for the Rhinology and Skull Base Fellowship—the same program where our very own Dr. Tran Locke completed her fellowship training!
Dr. Adappa led an engaging resident didactic on sinus surgery and gave a talk on the management of CSF leaks, in addition to guiding a hands-on lab simulation focused on advanced skull base and sinus surgery techniques.
