It varies depending on the personality of both the therapist and the client and the particular issues the client brings to therapy. My approach to treatment is rooted in my graduate training in psychodynamic theory -- meaning, it is based on the exploration of the unconscious and its influence on a person’s feelings, thoughts, attitudes, and behavior. The goal of psychotherapy is not to "fix" the
problem, although that can become a place of growth; rather, the purpose of psychotherapy is for a person to come to know and accept personhood, in such a way that there is less anxiety living in one's own skin and greater ease living in relationship to other people. The aim is not perfection but wholeness. Transformation occurs from the inside out. This does not occur through accurate interpretation of data, but rather the movement in our capacity to consider new ways of thinking and willingness to access new experiences, as connections are made that resonate. Together, client and therapist are able to read between the lines of life, into deeper dimensions previously obscure.
“You should not try to find whether an idea is just or correct. You should look for a completely different idea, elsewhere, in another area, so that something passes between the two which is neither in one nor the other”. -- Gilles Deleuze
