My first personal awareness of a trans person was with my dad’s sibling who transitioned into Veronica in 1970’s New York City. The family loved her sweet soul and gorgeous style. The stories shared were always full of appreciation and laughter. Unfortunately, she was murdered only a year after my birth. I’ve always wished that I knew her and had an Auntie to tell on my dad’s nonsense.
