One of the underlying causes of weight gain problems and obesity is binge eating. Binge eating disorder is characterized by repeated occurrences of uncontrollable binge eating in which the person consumes large quantities of food. Binge eating often begins in the teenage years or adulthood, and there may be a genetic component to it in roughly half of the people who struggle with the syndrome. Binge eating not only affects weight, but often impairs the quality of life with respect to work, sexual life, and self-esteem. This disorder can be associated with anxiety, depression, and even substance abuse. For this reason, if you have a thyroid condition and are suffering from binge eating, it is crucial to address your mood changes and anxiety that could be caused by your thyroid condition.
