recenter is focused on the concepts of hope, healing and home with the mission of providing
programs and services to help men and women recover from the diseases of alcoholism and
chemical dependency in order to lead more productive lives. For 67 years recenter has been a
leader in the fight against addiction, casting a wide net of strategies for individual recovery,
family, re-unification and community re-education. The recenter recovery process, which follows a 12-step model of Alcohol Anonymous, provides affordable housing for predominantly
homeless individuals. Allowing
residents to live in a safe, supportive community during their recover.

Chili Cook-Off Was Well Attended

Recovering from drug or alcohol abuse is no fun. There are continuing temptations to return to using. But we at Recenter encourage our residents to participate in special events that 𝗮𝗿𝗲 fun.

Recently we joined with other recovery centers to sponsor our spring Chili Cook-Off. We had two residents, Ruth C. and Roy H. who participated in the cooking events. They entered chili with beans and cornbread dishes.

There was also line dancing available to work off some of the food participants enjoyed. Everyone had a good time whether dancing or just visiting.

Chili Cook-Off

Chili / Chili con Carne is the favorite cold-weather dish of a lot of people. Some prefer it mild; others prefer heat. The kind of heat that warms your mouth as well as your tummy. All agree it’s their go-to dish for the cold weather.

Recenter has joined other members of the Party Sober Partnership in sponsoring its annual H-Town Sober Chili Cookoff on Saturday, February 25th starting at 10 a.m. and going to 4 p.m. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy some chili and cornbread. Although admission (and food) is free, we ask that you register so that we don’t run out of food.

The gang at Recenter will surely form some cookoff teams to compete in the contest. There are 5 different areas of competition:
• Best Texas Red
• Best Chili with Beans
• Best Vegetarian Chili
• Best Overall Chili
• Best Overall Cornbread

New Blankets Arrive Just in Time
We concluded our blanket drive with Mancuso's Harley Davidson on December 22nd, just two days before the freezing weather hit the Houston area. We received forty-eight blankets that we put to use immediately. Some of our residents live in older buildings and they were especially happy to have some new blankets to sleep under.

There's nothing better on a cold winter's night than a warm blanket to keep you warm. Thanks to Mancuso's for helping with this project.

Some Houstonians choose to brave our cold winter nights out of doors. They may stay in a tent or some other minimally protective shelter. Regardless, when the temperature plunges they would appreciate a blanket to provide protection from the cold. Again this year, recenter will team with Mancuso Harley-Davidson to collect blankets for their use. The blanket drive begins on Saturday, December 10th, and runs thru to Thursday, December 22nd. Those that spend their evenings outside will certainly appreciate it.

Just a few of the over 150 people who attended Recenter's Halloween Costume Party. We feasted on fried fish, dirty rice, fruit, cookies, and tons of candy. The Lady in Blue (dress) won first place in the costume contest and a dancing Unicorn won second.

We wound up the evening with card games and dominoes. Everyone had a good time.
