One way to beat the heat in Texas is breakfast al fresco dining! Brazos Towers Residents enjoyed breakfast tacos from the Texas-original Taco Cabana outside under the Big Top! The chain, which started in San Antonio in 1978, is known for their breakfast tacos, some of which you can get all day. A great time was had by all, basking in the summer breezes before heading back inside to escape the midday heat. Communal get-togethers like this help foster a sense of community at Brazos Towers, serving the whole person — mentally, spiritually, and physically. Brazos Towers Residents had an engaging visit to the Ocean Star Offshore Oil Rig and Museum in Galveston. A restored jack-up rig, it drilled for oil in the Gulf of Mexico from 1969 to 1984, creating over 200 wells. The visit was made even more special by the presence of our knowledgeable resident, Mark Childers, who, along with Resident Paul Koomey, worked in the industry for 30 years, earning spots in the Hall of Fame at the Museum. Mark shared his many years of industry experience, telling stories and anecdotes about their time on the rig that not only entertained but also engaged the rest of the residents, making the exhibits come to life! Outings like this are part of the reason that Brazos Towers was voted Best of the Best in Retirement Homes in Houston for FIVE years in a row! If you would like to join our community and be part of such interactive experiences, give one of our Retirement Counselors a call at 713-660-5000 today.

Brazos Tower Residents had a lovely afternoon of shopping at the Cottage Shop and dining at Katz's Deli across the street. The Cottage Shop, a thrift store sponsored by The Women's Home of Houston, is a beacon of hope for women in need. 100% of the proceeds from the shop support their mission of building communities that strengthen women and support families as they reclaim their stability. Katz's, a Montrose staple, has been serving around-the-clock New York-style eats since 2000. One Resident even tried the egg cream, a drink made of milk, carbonated water, and flavored syrup, which was popularized in Brooklyn around the turn of the century. These trips are part of meeting the needs of the whole person, mentally, physically, and spiritually. Brazos Towers Residents took a sobering and inspiring trip to the Houston Holocaust Museum. Charged with educating students and the public about the dangers of prejudice and hatred in society, it opened its doors in March of 1996. Since that time, impassioned notes, poems, artwork, and other gifts from school children and adults alike attest to the life-changing thoughts generated by just one visit to this unique facility. Although it is challenging, outings like this help ground our residents in the community by fostering a deeper understanding of the shared history and values, and by promoting empathy and tolerance. This, in turn, expands their compassion for others. This is just one way Brazos Towers attends to the needs of the whole person, mentally, spiritually, and physically.

Residents of Brazos Towers enjoyed springtime flower-arranging activities to lift their spirits during the dreary days of late February! The art of flower arranging has a rich history, stretching from churches in the Middle Ages to the grand throne rooms of European monarchs. Archaeological evidence indicates that ancient Egyptians were the first civilization to arrange flowers for decorative purposes. The Residents brought forth the same beauty as the ancient Egyptians thanks to Ally Rau, Senior Business Development Director at At Your Side, giving the residents tips and tricks for the best arrangement. What are you doing to anticipate spring? Let us know in the comments!
