In addition, we offer technologically superior facilities to provide the best care possible. Our patients often receive other treatments su

ch as chemotherapy, hormone therapy or surgery as well as radiation therapy. To ensure the best possible outcome, this multi-disciplinary approach requires collaboration and coordination among the specialists on a patient's treatment team. Therefore, during your first visit you will meet with your radiation oncologist and a nurse. Your radiation oncologist may consult with any other specialists as necessary before your treatment begins to determine the best course of action. In addition, other members of the Cancer Support Services Program may be brought in to better help you successfully manage your treatment. The major goal of radiation therapy is to maximize curing cancer while maintaining optimal organ function and quality of life. Because each patient's case presents unique challenges and requires individualized attention, we urge you to consult your radiation oncologist about which treatment plan is best for you. It is extremely important to seek out an expert team of physicians who specialize in your type of cancer to ensure optimal outcome.

Happy Earth Day!

In observance of Earth Day, we would like to bring awareness about Cancer-Causing Substances in the Environment.

Cancer develops due to changes in specific genes that affect how cells behave. Some of these changes happen naturally during cell division when DNA is copied. Others are caused by environmental factors that damage DNA, such as chemicals in cigarette smoke or ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

While certain harmful exposures, like smoking or too much sun, can be avoided, others are more difficult to escape—especially if they’re present in the air, water, food, or workplace materials. Scientists are researching which environmental factors may trigger or increase the risk of cancer. By identifying harmful exposures and where they are found, people may be better able to avoid them.

What is neck cancer?
Neck cancer is a term for malignant tumors that develop in your neck. It takes two primary forms:

Throat cancer
Throat cancer can affect the throat itself (pharynx), your voice box (larynx), your epiglottis (a small piece of cartilage at the top of your windpipe), or your tonsils. Most throat cancers stem from the same type of cancer cells but have different names depending on where it originates.

Thyroid cancer
Thyroid cancer affects the thyroid gland in your neck. This gland produces thyroid hormones that regulate your metabolism, influencing your weight, heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. There are several types of thyroid cancer, some of which are slow-growing, while others are very aggressive.

How is neck cancer treated?
The approach to treating throat and thyroid cancer is different:

Throat cancer
If you get a diagnosis at an early stage, radiation therapy might be the only treatment you need for throat cancer. Later stage throat cancers might benefit from a combination of radiation therapy with chemotherapy or surgery.

Thyroid cancer
If your thyroid cancer is minimal and has a low risk of spreading, you might not need treatment straight away. Active surveillance involves having blood tests and an ultrasound scan of your neck once or twice every year.

Your cancer might not grow and, therefore, won't need any treatment. If the surveillance exam detects any changes or growth at any point, you can begin treatment. Treatment often involves having surgery.

Following your operation, you might need to take radioactive iodine to destroy any remaining thyroid tissue. The Greater Houston Radiation Oncology team has specialist expertise in using I-131 radioactive iodine ablations for treating thyroid cancer.

Both types of neck cancers can benefit from radiation therapy in their later stages as well.

What is head cancer?

Head cancer can take various forms, affecting any of the structures and organs within your head. Some types of head cancer might include:

Esthesioneuroblastoma
Floor of the mouth cancer
Lip cancer
Mouth cancer
Nasal and paranasal tumors
Nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Pituitary tumors
Salivary gland tumors
Skin cancer
Soft palate cancer
Tongue cancer
There are often close links between head cancers and neck cancers. The type of head and most widespread neck cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, which affects the cells lining the inside of your nose, mouth, and throat.

Smoking and infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV) are the most common causes of squamous cell carcinoma. Excessive alcohol consumption could also increase your risk of developing head cancer.
