Big thank you to Nicole, Mincai, and Ryan for setting up and hanging out at the internship fair at the Southwestern Regional Music Therapy Conference! Extra shout out to Nicole for basically setting it all up as fight to survive another day with infant triplets and a toddler.

I know the team enjoyed meeting all the current students and sharing more about our growing program and all we’re doing here in Houston!

Wondering how music therapy can help you or your loved one in hospice? Here are three common goals.
Music is a medium that we all have experience with throughout our lives be that as casual listeners, music aficionados, or musicians of all levels. Very few people experience life without songs that correspond to positive life experiences at one time or another. Because of this we can pull from these positive experiences and memories to provide opportunities for connection and reminiscence. Even for those who’s memory is fading.

Research shows as memory fades music remains (or stays longer). This is due to music activating both hemispheres of the brain when engaging in music making and music listening.
Our most memorable songs occur between the ages of 15 and 25 as we experience a lot of growth and development at this time!
Utilizing music listening with patients with memory deficits such as Alzheimer’s and dementia can provide opportunities to reminisce on life experiences, engage socially in the context of familiar music, and help decrease anxiety.

The Meraki Music family is preparing to grow by 3 very soon! I’ve been pretty focused on getting myself and the team ready for my maternity leave and it appears that may begin sooner than anticipated. We have a c section scheduled for 35 weeks and I am currently 30 weeks but our recent ultrasound shows some potential placental issues developing that is causing our three gals to be pretty small.
We are excited to welcome the girls when the time is best for them. Work will continue forward without any interruptions as Nicole, Mincai, and Ryan are fabulous therapists and I have help on the backend of things to keep reports and paperwork flowing during my leave.

Prayers and positive thoughts over these next few weeks are so appreciated!

Back to school already! Summer flew by and we have reached the hottest point of summer in time to be back in the buildings.
I’ve written a couplet piggy back songs for our little friends to prepare and process the upcoming school year. Simple things such as what’s in your backpack and beginning to discuss expectations in the classroom. I hope they help normalize the school space in a fun and silly way.

Ryan and I had a great time at Moody Neighborhood Library leading a drum circle! (Ryan led, I just participated haha). That library is definitely a special space creating a comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone who visits. Thanks so much to for having us and a big thanks to our teens who joined us! It’s a special thing taking time to make music together. ❤️
