Feeling the love in this SLP Day!

I love when clients and their families give me gifts. Today I was surprised with fresh vegetables from the farm (yum)!

Audiobooks are amazing! (I’ve read 51 audiobooks this year). As an SLP the language promoted through audiobooks is amazing. I recommend giving one a try.

Since school was out this week my daughter did some fun volunteering! The animals were fun and are such a great way to work on language skills for little ones.

This picture is from one of the books I have read. People with dyslexia typically have average or higher than average IQ's and are more willing to try something new, fail, and try again (because they do this every single day at school) making them creators, inventors, and entrepreneurs. How could this be looked at as a negative?! The children I work with that have dyslexia inspire me to find a variety of ways to help them reach their speech on language goals tapping into the different ways they may learn (which is so fun!).

Every word matters. It’s so exciting when a child finds their preferred method of communication.

We are ALL multimodal communicators. We use a variety of strategies to express our thoughts. The same is true for our AAC learners. Communication is about connection. If we insist on one method of communication, we put our connection at risk. Respect whatever form of communication your learner chooses to use. Model language that might meet their communication needs using the strategy you would like to teach.⁣

Value all forms of communication!⁣ Respect how your learner choose to communicate. Acknowledge what they have expressed and model the mode you want to teach. ⁣

Eric Carle is a beloved author in the speech therapy world. We will honor him by continuing to read his books to help children grow their language skills. He will be truly missed. 💜

From the Eric Carle Team: It is with heavy hearts that we share that Eric Carle, author and illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other beloved classics, passed away on Sunday, May 23rd at the age of 91.

When asked why he thinks The Very Hungry Caterpillar has remained popular for so long, Carle said, “I think it is a book of hope. Children need hope. You, little insignificant caterpillar can grow up into a beautiful butterfly and fly into the world with your talent.”

Thank you, Eric Carle for sharing your great talent with so many generations of young readers.
